“Fuck, I don’t know what came over me. This wasn’t supposed to happen,” he muttered.
And then my gaze fell upon the bulge that I had been so desperate to touch just moments before.
I didn’t know what to say or do, so I did the only thing that felt right: I bolted out from his apartment, completely forgetting my robe, and quickly ran back to my room. I slammed the door behind me, my chest heaving. My entire body throbbed with need. I was soaked for him, and if he touched me again, I would combust.
I crawled beneath the covers. My nightgown was still damp, and my nipples were painfully erect. No other man had ever kissed me like that—he might as well have seared his lips into mine.
I waited silently and wondered whether he would go to his room. I turned off the lights and grabbed my phone, attempting to distract myself, but I was too wound up, too aroused. My fingers slid of their own volition between my legs. I needed to find some relief before I could rest tonight. Within two minutes, a fleeting orgasm rushed through me, but it gave no release, as all I wanted was him. I craved him between my thighs. Oh God!
At some point later, sleep finally came. That night, I vowed to myself that whatever had happened in that kitchen would never happen again. He’d made it clear that it was a mistake, and I wanted nothing more than to forget this had ever happened and go back to being his employee. I knew I was fooling myself, thinking we could stay away from each other, because after one taste, I was hooked.
Chapter Eleven
Spencer
The next couple of weeks flew by, and I was like a ticking bomb, so everyone stayed out of my path. During a meeting, Jeremy mentioned that I’d made Dolores from public affairs cry the other day.
I tried to keep my distance from Laura as much as possible, but since I was coming home for dinner every night, for Maja’s sake, this was unavoidable. We never talked about the kiss. Hell, we never even spoke.
I hadn’t called Tanya or any other girl afterwards because that disastrous night had taught me not to pay for sex anymore. For the first time, I couldn’t get aroused, and it was all because of Laura.
Every time I thought I had my sexual urges under control, the memory of Laura’s lips on mine had my body reacting all over again. I was so pathetic and realised that my constant wanking in the shower wasn’t helping. I’d never been attracted to anyone who disrespected my authority so fucking much. And after the way she’d spoken to me in the kitchen, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to fire her or fuck her until she apologised for how she’d spoken to me.
I was happy that Laura was getting along well with Maja. This was the one thing that kept me sane.
After the kiss, I tried being home at a reasonable time, so Maja and I had dinner together. Laura cooked every now and then, but our conversations at the dining table were strained. Often, I noticed her glancing in my direction, and I appreciated the flush that spread across her cheeks when our eyes met. This attraction between us was dangerous, and the kiss had only proved it.
My schedule was already packed before the summer officially started. I was busy all the time, while Jeremy held the fort.
Luckily for me, Laura spent most of her weekends back in her flat in Camden with her roommate. She took Maja out a few times on the weekend while I had to go away for short trips. I was a politician through and through, but I also ran an investment company. When I’d been elected and took the post as Prime Minister, I paused my investment activities so I could focus on this role. However, since Laura had moved in, I kept myself busy with stocks and shares during any free moment, just so I didn’t have to think about her.
On Friday evening, my phone rang. When I saw my mother’s smiling photo, I wanted to let it go to voicemail but knew she would just show up at my door if I did that, so I answered.
“Hello, Mother, how are you?”
“Always so polite,” she said.
I passed people in the corridor and gave them all a curt nod before continuing our conversation.
“I’m very well, thank you, darling,” she said. “How have you been? I heard you’ve had a tough week.”
“I’m managing it all,” I replied.
She rarely just chatted unless it was about Maja.
“Of course you are, darling, so I’m hosting a family dinner this Sunday and would like you to come over with Maja.”
“We have plans on Sunday, Mum. Maja might have another birthday party she has to attend,” I lied.
My mother tried to be supportive, but she was also trying to control me. As I was the oldest of us four, she was always on my case.
“Spencer Banks, don’t lie to me. Cath told me your schedule is clear; Maja doesn’t have any birthday parties. She also mentioned that you have a new nanny, and I took the liberty to introduce myself to her, after Cath gave me her number. It’s just a family dinner—all your brothers will be there as well as your new nanny, of course,” she continued.
It didn’t surprise me that Mum already knew about my new nanny. She and Cath spoke regularly. Damn it.
“That’s short notice, Mum. Laura won’t come for dinner. I wouldn’t expect her to. She doesn’t work weekends, only when she needs to take Maja to tennis,” I explained, wiping away the sweat from my forehead as I walked into the living room and undid my tie.
Giggles came from the kitchen.
