“Yes, the governor has two sons who just returned to town. By chance, we found out that the older one is into domination. He is keen on ownership and has taken a liking to that one. She’s in his class at school. The boss would like to have something to hold over the governor, especially since he rejected the offer to join the fraternity years ago. The boss plans on using her to get what they need. The son will be getting an invite to our next open night… possibly the younger brother too. It won’t hurt to have both of them in our pocket.”

I turn around and walk down the bar a little to slide the tray of glasses into a slot, then I push my damp hair back out of my face, hiding my excitement that Max and Ryland might be in with the traffickers.

“What a shame,” he mutters, but Matthew slaps him on the back as I head toward them, none of them noticing that I have been listening to the conversation. Idiots. I slide the other tray into the washer.

“Don’t worry, we’ll have something to keep you happy. Your favorite will be there too.”

“Hey, Mac,” Anders calls, and I turn around to face him. “You can take a break.”

I wave and head back out to the break room. It’s perfect timing. I need to send Lathan a message. I know he and Dayton are hiding in an office across from the bar, taking photos of all the patrons as they come and go. I want to make sure he took a photo of these two so we can use facial recognition to ID them. I only hope they came in the front and not the back with Matthew. I was too busy to see which way they came in.

I grab my phone, a pack of smokes, and a can of soda out of my locker and head out the back door. I quickly send Lathan a message, asking him to keep an eye out for the two businessmen. I light up the smoke but just hold it in my hand. It’s only there in case anyone comes looking for me.

Lathan

Will do, how’s it going?

Kenzie

I overheard an interesting conversation. I’ll fill Anders in, and he can tell you all.

Lathan

Have you been able to explore the club yet?

I snort out loud as I respond.

Kenzie:

Hardly, it’s been busy since I walked in. I’m closing with Anders, so he can show me what to do. Maybe we will get a chance then.

Lathan

I’ll hack the security tapes and cause a glitch so you can poke around. Just let me know when.

It’s so handy having a techy on the same team. If I’d been on my own, I would have had to plant a device, which would have given my tech operator a way in, then call them to let them know it was done and wait for them to get back to me. This is so much easier and time saving.

“How’s your night going?” The question startles me, and I want to kick myself for not paying attention to my surroundings. I shove my phone into the tiny back pocket of my ridiculous shorts and turn to face Matthew.

“It’s been good. I didn’t expect it to be so busy. Your club is really popular,” I gush, bringing the cigarette up to my lips and taking a drag.

He frowns. “I’m not sure Martha is going to be happy if she smells that on you.” He nods to the offending cigarette.

“Yeah, you may be right. It’s a nasty habit. I only do it when I’m nervous, and I was super nervous tonight. I really want to make a good impression.”

His eyes slide down my body and back again, and he loses the frown. “I wouldn’t worry too much about that. I’m heading out for the night. Anders said he’s going to walk you through closing, and then he’s going to give you a lift home. I promised Martha that I would get you home after your shift.”

“Oh, okay, thanks. That’s really nice of you.” I smile at him.

He chuckles. “She would have my head if I let any of her kids get lost. One of the others that’s living with you is starting tomorrow too, a Michael or a…” He trails off.

“Miller,” I supply, and he snaps his fingers.

“Yeah, that’s it. Well, I guess I’ll see you at church tomorrow.” He wanders down the alley and disappears around the corner.

I heave out a sigh of relief and throw the burning cigarette on the ground, stubbing it out with my toe. Thank goodness I texted Lathan instead of calling him.

I grab my phone again.
