I turned to glare at Noah.

He held up his hands. “Come on, man. If we’d done it, you’d be the first in line with the barbs.”

“I must be really annoying.”

“You get used to it. Then you’re kinda fun to be around.” Noah grinned.

I snorted. Why did I hang out with these people again?

“Pizza!” Wes came in, closed the door behind him, and dropped two large pizza boxes in the center of the table. “One sec and I’ll get plates. If you don’t like the toppings, pick them off and don’t complain.”

“Aw, that’s half the fun.” Cody flipped open one of the boxes and closed his eyes as he breathed in deeply. “Mmm.”

Wes crouched in front of the credenza, opened another of the doors, and pulled out a stack of paper plates. He turned and slid them down the table. They bumped into the nearest pizza box. “All right, someone pray and let’s dig in.”

Scott said a quick blessing for the food before he reached for the plates and started passing them out.

I waited until everyone had one before leaning forward to snag a slice out of the closest box. It looked like it was supreme. Good enough.

Once the noise from getting food settled, I swallowed the bite I was chewing, took a drink, and cleared my throat. “Thanks for coming, guys.”

“Pizza on Monday. I’m good.” Cody grinned.

“What’s up?” Wes reached for a second slice of pizza and added it his plate.

I wasn’t really sure where to begin. “I texted you all when Faith came back and agreed to let me help her with her situation. So for part of that, we met with the FBI agent that one of Scott’s former coworkers at Robinson knows.”

Wes glanced over at Scott. “Is that Christopher’s sister?”

Scott nodded. “Yeah.”

“Nice.” Wes nodded. “I heard a little about that whole situation. Seems like he’s a good guy?”

That was the impression I’d gotten from Christopher and his sister. I wasn’t completely sure it was accurate after our meeting with him, but I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt. I let the comment go without response. “Turns out, Faith agreeing to testify wouldn’t really do anything useful. Orbison—that’s the FBI guy—had a whole song and dance about why. I don’t completely buy it, but it’s not my area, so maybe I’m off base. Anyway, what he wants—and what Faith agreed to—is for her to essentially go undercover and get more dirt on the cartel. Something more actionable.”

“What’s actionable mean?” Noah frowned. “That sounds super unspecific.”

“Tell me about it.” I blew out a breath and looked down at my pizza. After a moment, I took a bite and chewed. No one spoke. It was probably a good thing that they were interested and listening. “Hopefully she’ll know it when she sees it.”

“Aren’t they going to be suspicious if she shows up and says hi?” Cody leaned back in his chair. “I’m not a criminal mastermind, but that just doesn’t seem like it’s the kind of thing they’ll just be okay with.”

I snickered. “I had similar thoughts. We’re supposed to let her get ‘caught’ by them. Meanwhile, I’m going to take on a client who looks dirty on the surface so maybe they’ll trust me enough that I can keep an eye on her.”

“What?” Austin shook his head. “That’s the stupidest idea I think I’ve ever heard. What about your reputation? No one’s going to hire you if it comes out that you were an attorney for a cartel.”

“I had those reservations. The FBI has assured me that it won’t come back to bite me.”

“I can only imagine how much those assurances are worth.” Scott scowled. “Why would you agree to this?”

“Because Faith said she was in. And this was the only way I could think of to help. I don’t want her to have to do it alone.” I studied my pizza again before taking another bite. It tasted like dust and I wasn’t all that hungry anymore. Every time I thought or talked about this dumb plan, my stomach twisted into knots. But what else was I supposed to do?

No one spoke.

I took another bite. I didn’t have anything else to add. They might be expecting me to have more to say, but I was going to need for them to give me a hint before I could.

“Wow.” Cody propped his elbows on the table. “That’s a lot.”

I nodded.
