“What are we doing?” Faith turned and frowned at me. “This isn’t your condo.”
“Nope.” I undid my seat belt and pushed open the door. “We’re going to go meet some of my friends.”
Faith’s jaw dropped. She blinked.
I got out of the car, then leaned in and held her gaze. “Coming?”
“I have questions.”
“Okay.” I rested one arm along the roof of the car and tilted my head to the side. “Shoot.”
Faith took a deep breath, paused, then blew it out. She scowled at me.
My eyebrows lifted.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally undid her seat belt and shoved open her door. I winced slightly. She didn’t even look to see if she was going to hit something. Thankfully, her side of the car was against the curb.
I closed my car door and joined her on the sidewalk. She gave her door a firmer push than was really warranted, then crossed her arms.
“This way.” I started down the sidewalk toward Scott and Whitney’s end unit. I wanted, with everything in me, to check and see if she was following. But also? I kind of didn’t care. She had questions, apparently, but wasn’t going to ask them. Super fun.
Faith cleared her throat. “About these friends.”
“Yeah?” I glanced back at her and slowed so we walked beside each other.
“Why am I meeting them?”
“First, because they’re my friends.”
She shook her head. “Bzzt. Not buying it. We’ve been cooped up in your condo all weekend. And the office today. I don’t think meeting your friends was something on the agenda until now. Try again.”
I sighed. “Fine. That’s second. Because you need a place to hang out during the day that’s more interesting than my office.”
“So they’re potential babysitters.”
“If that’s how you want to look at it, then sure.” I paused with my hand on the stair rail of Scott’s front steps. “But they could be your friends, too.”
The sound Faith made was decidedly inelegant. And also made it clear she didn’t believe me.
Whatever. That was her choice. Just like running again would be her choice. I climbed the stairs to the front door and pushed the doorbell.
Faith had made it up two of the steps before the door opened.
Scott grinned broadly. “He’s alive!” He dropped his voice to sound like a mad scientist.
“You’re so funny.”
“I think so.” Scott stepped back. “Come on in. Are you begging dinner? Because that’s cool, but also Beckett chose tonight so we had mac and cheese. There’re leftovers.”
I wrinkled my nose. “I’ll pass. I don’t want to take up a lot of your time.”
Scott’s eyebrows lifted when Faith finally joined me at the door.
“I wanted to introduce you to Faith Clarke.” I stumbled over the last name. To my knowledge, Faith had never changed her name. Certainly when I’d searched for her, I’d always succeeded with Clarke. But I also had never even tried Lee.
“Nice to meet you.” Scott shot a quizzical look my direction before gesturing toward the inside of the townhouse.
I stepped in and looked at Faith over my shoulder. She hesitated slightly before following.
