He waved his hand. “Don’t worry about it, it’s my treat. A welcome to the team lunch.”
She was going to decline, then her stomach grumbled loudly, so she stood. “Thank you. That’s very kind of you.”
He gave her a smile that oozed confidence, and she realized he was quite handsome, in a grown-up frat guy kind of way. Had she met him in a bar two months earlier, she might have even considered going home with him, or at least giving him her phone number.
Funny how she had zero interest now. There’s no way she could picture Kyle giving her two orgasms in the shower before six in the morning.
Damn you, Liam McDonnell. You better not have ruined all other men for me.
But she had a sneaky suspicion he had.
It was Utah, Kyle, Leo, and a short, muscular guy named Matt Munger who wore his shirt too tight. The four of them headed out the door together. In the elevator to the main floor, the guys talked about the Red Sox game from the night before, and Matt told them as they stepped out onto the first floor, “Guess who’s sitting in a box seat at this weekend’s game?” He jammed his thumb into his chest. “This guy.”
“Wow,” Leo replied. “How’d you manage that?”
“The company one of the chicks I’m dating works for has a suite. She got tickets for being employee of the month or some shit and asked me to go with her.”
“Nice,” Kyle dutifully replied.
This is where the douchebag should have just shut up and moved on, but alas…
He laughed. “Yeah, I think she thinks I’ll be exclusive with her if she buys me enough shit. Too bad it’s never gonna happen. The Munger Man is in too high demand, I can’t limit myself to just one woman.”
Utah didn’t even bother trying to hide her eyeroll. She could hear the glee in Matt’s voice when he said, “Looks like I’m not the only one in high demand.”
She had no idea what he was talking about until Kyle said, “Damn. I guess I owe you an apology, Utah.”
“What do you mean?”
She looked to what had their attention—Liam with his hand on the back of a statuesque blonde in a white lab coat, guiding her through the lunch line.
Things suddenly started making sense—why he wanted her to start driving herself and why he’d urged her to start working from home, why he couldn’t have lunch with her today, why he’d “worked late” last night and didn’t have sex with her when he got home…
“Here I thought you only got the consulting gig because you were sleeping with the CEO. Obviously, I was wrong, and I’m sorry.”
“Our boss man got game!” Matt exclaimed loudly. Maybe too loudly, because people turned to look at them, Liam included.
Their eyes connected, and she gave him a nasty glare before turning her attention back to her co-workers.
“So, what’s good here?”
****
Liam
He tried to pay attention to what Dr. Jennings was saying.
Really.
But when he saw Utah in line with Kyle, and the little twerp paid for her lunch, he had a hard time focusing on anything but what his little honeybee was doing.
The group sat at a table not far from where he was sitting with Boston General’s much needed new ER doctor. Utah was all abuzz, making her fellow IT workers laugh out loud. Then Kyle casually put his arm on the back of her chair, and when she didn’t move it, Liam about lost his shit.
In fact, instead of moving his arm, she looked over at where Liam sat with the beautiful—and single—Dr. Jennings, and leaned into the dude, while she let out a fake laugh.
It was all Liam could do to stay in his seat.
Oh, baby girl, you’re going to pay for that tonight.
