He shook his head. “He likes her a lot. Damn, that red hair…didn’t know I was a sucker for a redhead.”
“We can message her. See if she responds.”
He got up and made his usual sandwiches and stuffed them in a bag, along with an apple. “Why does this feel wrong but also right? Yes. Let’s message her. It will show up on my app as well?”
I barely contained the bolt of happiness that shot through me. It had been too long. “Give me two minutes. We’re sending her a video message.”
Chapter Seven
Haven
I smelled a gift of amends before I heard Tilly’s footsteps. She thought cookies, especially those gourmet varieties in the big pink box were going to get me to forgive her for activating my account without my permission.
She walked in with the box in her hands, an offering to her offended friend.
“What are you doing?” I couldn’t help the laugh that intertwined with my pretend frustration. Never could stay mad at Tilly for long.
“An offering to the angry goddess,” she sang.
“Cookies don’t solve everything, Tilly. I’m still pissed off at you.”
She put the box right in front of me and immediately, I was in a sugar, vanilla, and chocolate trance. “You can’t stay mad at me. I did it out of the goodness of my heart. You have a bunch of matches. Stop giving that asshole power over you.”
I flipped open the lid and found a variety of sugar bombs. “I have more than the one match.”
“Can I look?” she asked, putting her hand out. Tilly was still in hot water, but she would always be my friend.
“Here.”
While she perused the app, I cut the cookies in fourths and went with a lemon-ice box kind first. She nabbed a brownie one and groaned putting it in her mouth. “These are so damned good. Have you looked at these? I bet I can guess which one you like.”
There were several matches. All but one were single wolves, as in one male. It wasn’t that they weren’t attractive, but my wolf didn’t react at all to them. I relied on her reaction. Especially after Jerome. My wolf had bowed up that night, showed her teeth as soon as he sat across from us, but I ignored it.
Now, I heeded her warnings and, when it came to these matches, heeded her whines as well. She was loud about Collyn and Fritz. Louder than she’d ever been.
“Which one do you think I like?” I hadn’t responded to any of them. I let the knowledge fester inside me, wondering if I should really try again. “Since you know me so well.”
The thing about me, I wasn’t easy. Being with me wouldn’t be for the weakhearted. The human side of me and my wolf side were often at odds. My wolf was an omega, one that yearned to be taken care of, protected, made to feel safe by a mate. But my human side, another story altogether. I owned my own company. I bought my own house when I turned twenty-three and it was a huge house. Silly me still had aspirations of having a big family. I took care of myself in most ways.
I was independent and a boss babe on one hand and a needy omega craving mates on the other.
It would take quite a man to be able to handle that.
Most shifter males that I had met weren’t willing to give or compromise much when it came to traditional roles.
“The two hunky ones for sure.”
I snorted. Of course my best friend could tell which one I would pick. “Why do you say that?”
“Because that’s your type. You like them a bit…husky?”
I scoffed. She was, of course, absolutely correct, but still. “Give me that.” I got to the pictures of Fitz and Collyn and barely contained a smile. Not barely. I didn’t contain my smile at all. I reached up and touched my lips, feeling the movement. “They’re so handsome. Like two very strong teddy bears. Don’t you just want to cuddle them?”
“No. Well, kind of. What do they do for work?”
I pretended to scroll some more, searching for the information, but it was all for show. “Um, a biologist and a construction worker.”
“So, squishy and firm at the same time. They could pick you up, honeymoon-style but would also not refuse the last piece of pizza. Gods, that is so your type.”
