His gaze is warm and soft as he studies me. “You. That’s the one thing I needed, but I didn’t have.”
“What about your pack? Don’t you miss them?”
“My pack has a good alpha to watch over them. One who wants the job and is happy to lead. So I miss them sometimes, but I needed my mate. I needed you.”
A new smile twists his lips.
“What?” I ask.
His smile grows until it turns into a laugh. “You.” Still laughing, he rolls me on my back, stretching his body over mine. Only then does his laughter fade. “You’re the best thing I dug from the ground.”
I mock-glare at him as I fight to contain my laugh. “How did you not laugh?”
He kisses me. “With great difficulty, sweetheart. With great difficulty.”
“Did you ever regret leaving your family?” I ask.
He searches my face. “Regret it? As weeks turned into months, I started having doubts that I would ever find you. Those doubts never lasted.”
“Why not?”
“Because I saw what I could have and refused to settle for anyone else but you,” he says quietly. “I saw the bond that mated couples shared in my pack, and I’d have regretted not trying to find you if I’d stayed. The rest of the pack wasn’t that surprised once the shock of my announcement wore off. They knew I was only ever going to be a one-woman guy, and that woman had to be one of a kind.”
“And am I one of a kind?”
“You are,” he quietly agrees, kissing me softly.
When he starts to deepen it, I press my fingers into his chest and he lifts his head. “I do love you.”
His smile is soft. “I know,” he says, lowering his head.
I lean my head to the side, evading his kiss. “You know?”
“I do.”
“Ty?” I say after he’s nearly kissed me brainless.
“Sweetheart?”
“I’m sorry I left you and you had a nightmare.”
“Not your fault.”
“But—”
He kisses my forehead. “Not. Your. Fault.”
I take in the shadows creeping across the floor. We’ve literally spent the entire day in this bed, only emerging to use the bathroom. But I have to leave it soon.
“I need to talk to Clara.” And it’s a conversation I’m dreading.
Ty pulls away to look at me. “Have you asked her what she wants?”
“I know Clara. She wants to leave, and I’m not sure it’s a good idea for her to just go off on her own. Seth and Cody tracked us here, which means they might have told Adrian where she is.”
“Considering the lengths she went to shove us together, I’d say maybe there’s something else she wants. Ask her. You might be surprised at the answer. Maybe she’s been thinking about where she wants to go and what she wants to do. If she doesn’t have a plan, we can talk one out and figure something out that might be safer for her.”
“That sounds very reasonable. I hadn’t thought an alpha would—” I erupt into giggles when Ty ruthlessly tickles me.
