“Sweetheart?”

If anything has happened to Clara, it will be my fault for not doing a good enough job of looking out for her.

I don’t hear him cross the room toward me. His fingers lift my chin and he stares into my face for a count of three seconds, then he tugs until I’ve collided with his chest. He likes to do that a lot, and I’d accuse him of manhandling me if I didn’t love it so much.

He brushes a fleeting kiss on the top of my head. “No guilt allowed. Now come on, let’s go get your sister.”

Startled, I blink up at him. “Together?”

His eyes dip, lingering on my lips. “Together. Why?”

“I was expecting you to take over. Maybe order me to stay somewhere safe while you did everything.”

He looked like he was getting ready to kiss me. I’m almost certain of it.

His eyes are serious as he tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. “There’s an important part of being mates you seem to skip right over.”

“What part is that?”

“The part where we’re partners.” He gives me a hard kiss on the lips and, after snagging my hand, leads the way down the stairs. His nostrils flare as he follows Clara’s scent.

I observe him quietly and ask myself why I’m letting him hold my hand.

We step out onto the porch, and he peers down at me. “Question?”

“You’re a lot more reasonable than I thought you’d be.”

He lifts a brow.

“Alpha. I’m used to…” When I realize where this conversation is heading, I promptly shut my trap as Ty leads us down the back porch and into the forest where Clara’s orange blossom scent is stronger.

We’ve crossed the backyard clearing and reached the forest when Ty squeezes my hand. “Used to what?”

I shake my head. “Nothing. Someone said they saw Clara was heading this way, and that two guys followed. But I can’t smell them. Should we shift first or?—”

I yelp as suddenly I have my back to a tree and an alpha way up close, his wolf shining brightly down at me.

“Used to alphas hurting you or wanting you?” He leans close, his eyes sharpening. “Because I have to say, sweetheart, I’m not a fan of either of those options. But I need to know which one it is.”

“My sister?—”

“Is safe. The sooner you tell me what I want to know, the sooner we can keep going.”

Safe? How would he know when we’ve barely started looking for her?

My eyes narrow. “There it is.”

“What is?”

“Evidence of that unreasonable alpha behavior.” I put my palms on his chest and shove. Hard. Does it do a goddamn thing? No, because this guy has muscles made of cement.

He leans closer. “Tell me.”

I shove again. “Why do you need to know?”

He cups my nape with one large hand, and he leans so close his lips brush mine, briefly distracting me. “So I know what alpha I need to kill.”

“Kill!” My eyebrows fly up. “For hurting me?”
