When all was said and done, we walked Kyle back to the front door.
“Well, man, it all seems on the up and up, to be honest with you,” Kyle said happily. “I’m going to go ahead and sign you guys off on those adoption proceedings. You should get the paperwork in the mail in a couple weeks.”
“Fantastic,” I said, trying to keep my cool.
“Wonderful!” Marley said, beaming. “And you’re welcome up here anytime, by the way. It was so nice chatting with you.”
“Maybe once the thaw is over, I’ll bring some dudes up to the lake.” Kyle grinned. “Gotta give it some time though, you know? Can’t have it look like you bribed me with a day on the lake, you know?”
We all laughed, saying our final goodbyes as Kyle got in his truck and drove away.
Marley looked at me as we closed the door, her smile barely contained behind pressed lips.
“Well?” I said, already knowing what was coming.
She squealed and jumped into my arms. I laughed and spun her around, holding her with one arm as I scooped my son up in the other, bringing them close and kissing them both.
“We did it!” Marley said brightly.
“Did what?” Noah asked, confused. “Made a new friend?”
“Kyle, our new friend,” I said. “He just said that Marley can adopt you, buddy. How do you feel about that?”
“He did? Marley can be my real momma now?!”
“Well, in a couple weeks. But as soon as those papers come, Noah, yes,” she said. “I’m going to be your real momma. I mean, I already am, but everyone else will know it, too. Isn’t that exciting?”
“Yes!” he cried. “Daddy! Daddy, PUT ME DOWN!”
“Whoa, alright! You okay, buddy?” I asked, setting him down.
“I have to go TELL EVERYONE!” he shouted before sprinting into the other room.
I laughed and looked at my wife, still holding her against me. I cupped her face with my free and kissed her deeply. She hummed, and I could smell the build of that arousal that had been plaguing her since the injection. I chuckled against her lips.
“Can you wait a few hours?” I asked slyly. “I want to enjoy this with Noah and the rest of them for a little while longer.”
She nodded. “I can wait,” she said, smiling. “For once, something is finally going right. We should hold onto that as long as we can, right?”
I couldn’t agree more.
Chapter 14
Marley
Well, it went without saying that things couldn’t keep going our way. At least, that seemed to be the way of it when it came to our lives.
A few days after being approved to move forward with Noah’s adoption, we had another appointment at the clinic with the gene therapist. It seemed to mostly go well for everyone involved. The doctor wanted to wait a little longer to give me my next injection, though. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed by that information. But there was more risk with the experimental treatments going on at this time, and he didn’t want to chance having to split his attention between the alpha’s wife and the other members of the pack. This was something I could understand, but it was still a bit of a letdown to be delayed.
There weren’t any particularly strong reactions to the injection while we were at the clinic, but late in the night, while Cole and I were asleep, a knock came on our door. The sound was a frantic staccato, waking us both from our deep sleep.
Cole was on his feet first, hurrying over to the door and throwing it open. I heard his hushed, worried tone. “What’s wrong?”
It was Ashton I heard respond to the question. “B-b-bleeding. A bunch of the shifters…they’re bleeding…the injection…”
I hurried out of bed, slipping into a housecoat. Cole looked back at me as I approached. “Hospital?” he asked me, still half-asleep.
I shook my head. “I think it would be more stressful to get them there when they’re all in pain and bursting out of their skins,” I said. “We helped Travis through it last time; we can do it again.” I turned to Ashton. “How many people are in a bad way?”
