“She comes with me,” he said stubbornly.

“No.”

Cannon looked at me, the challenge in his eyes clear. “No?”

“I remain here with my pack. I am not yours. You have no control over me.”

His eyes flared with challenge, but it was Kris who spoke, “We have called for the Pack Council. We need to know what happened with the humans and after the humans.” His glare was hard as he looked at the alpha. “There is a lot to discover.”

Cannon kept his eyes on me. “This is where you would rather be?” he asked as if we were the only ones in the room. “This pack, these wolves who spurn you? Treat you as less?”

“Enough!” Kris bit out. “She stays with me.”

Cannon held my gaze for a long moment and then abruptly rose. “Fine. When the Pack Council comes, let me know.” He gestured to Royce, and they headed for the door. Turning back to look at me, he ran his eyes over me slowly. “Be good, pup.”

“Fuck you.”

“Next time, if you’re lucky.” He winked as he turned away. He looked over his shoulder at Kris. “Ask yourself why you have a mate,” he told him. “Ask yourself why he’s called pack leader and not alpha.”

Cannon opened the door, standing back to let Royce walk out. He looked at all three of us. “Ask yourself what the fuck is wrong with this pack.” His eyes locked with Kris. “You don’t need to look too far for the source of that bullet. Open your eyes.” With a look of scorn, he left us.

CHAPTER 28

Kezia

My head was reeling. “What?” I felt the privacy seal us within the room. “What did he mean?”

“You need to leave,” Kris bit out, surging to his feet. “Now. Tonight.”

“I need to…what? Why?”

“You’re not safe here,” the shaman said in agreement, his head cocked to the side. “Had your brother allowed it, you would have been better with the Blackridge Peak Alpha.”

“She’s never going to be with them,” Kris snarled. “What were you thinking, Kezia? Him? Really?”

“Cass? Really?” I shouted back.

Kris’s eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was saying. “Him? Him!” He turned to the shaman. “Him?”

“It would appear so,” the shaman said with a faint smile. “The Goddess does love her trickery.”

“But Landon?” Kris struggled.

“Wants a mate like his sister has a mate,” I snapped. “But only an alpha can have a mate.”

Oh shit.

“Oh, shit, you’re an alpha.”

Kris looked at me as if I had lost my mind. “Be careful what you say, Kezia.”

“Cannon told me, he told me only an alpha has a true mate.” I sat down with a thump. “Why didn’t we know?”

Kris was avoiding my questions and my look. I stared at the shaman sitting non-plussed. “You did know,” I said with sudden understanding. “Kris?”

He shrugged. “I suspected,” he said with a glance at the shaman. “And then we confirmed it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I demanded.
