When I get in my car, I send Mason a text.

Brunch went well. See you both tonight.

When I walk into the venue, I’m in awe. There are flowers everywhere, a massive happy birthday banner, and long skinny tables covered with more flowers and food.

Each round table has a beautiful floral centerpiece and flameless candles. I’m glad I wore my favorite little black dress. This party is even fancier than anticipated.

“Hi, Mrs. Hawkes,” I call.

Eliza’s mother turns around and rushes over to hug me.

“Serena, it’s been such a long time,” she exclaims. “I was just telling Eliza I couldn’t remember the last time I saw you.”

“I know. She invited me to the family dinner tomorrow night.”

She nods. “You should come. The more the merrier.”

I guess that means dinner is still on. Eliza’s family wouldn’t skip a big meal.

“I’m a bit flustered right now,” she says. “My mother insisted on inviting Caitlin and Dean tonight. Did Eliza tell you about that situation? Things are still a little tense with them and my sister. Eliza says she’s over it, but it must still sting. Can you imagine seeing your old boyfriend at every extended family function?”

Eliza’s mom continues her tirade. This situation has been a family scandal for months. Eliza has moved past it, but apparently her mother still hasn’t.

I nod. “I know all about it.”

“Can you believe it?” she snaps. “My niece is a piece of work. She doesn’t care about anyone but herself. But truthfully, my Eliza is too good for Dean anyway.”

She practically spits out his name like it’s poison.

“Eliza is much better off with Mason,” I remind her. “He’s one of the best.”

She puts her hands on her heart. “We all adore him. But we’re still waiting on the engagement. I know it’s coming, but Mason needs to be ready.”

I smile. This is going to be such an epic night for everyone. Eliza’s family always treated Mason like he was one of their own. He’s officially getting the family he’s always wanted.

Suddenly I notice Eliza’s grandmother giving instructions near the door.

“I should go say hi to Grandma,” I tell her. Eliza’s grandmother is that person who automatically becomes everyone’s grandma.

“She’ll be thrilled to see you. Mother, look who’s here,” she calls, linking her arm with mine.

The next few minutes are filled with more greetings and hugs. The Hawkes family makes everyone feel so welcome.

Slowly the guests begin to arrive. I chat with Eliza’s co-workers Josslyn and Addie, whom I’ve met a few times. And then Dean and Caitlin walk in. Admittedly, I’m a bit surprised he showed up. Eliza told me they’re all trying to get along for her grandmother’s sake, but this is her birthday party, not a family dinner.

“Hi, Serena,” Dean says when he sees me. “It’s been a while.”

“It has.”

“Serena, it’s great to see you,” Caitlin says, throwing her arms around me. I’ve met her a few times over the years, so I guess that means we’re on hugging terms now. Since this night is about Eliza, I hug her back.

“Hey. Congrats on your engagement.”

Caitlin practically shoves her left hand into my face.

I pretend to be interested in her engagement ring. It is beautiful, but I really don’t care.
