“Ohhh,” Jess says under her breath.
Cam and the others don’t say anything, and he has an unreadable expression on his face.
Wow. Lilly is pulling out all the stops. She needed to figure out a way to work more closely with Cam, and she did. Well played. She might be a mastermind.
From this point on, I’m checked out. If there’s anything important I need to know, Jess will tell me.
“Are you okay?” Jess asks when the meeting is finally over.
“Yes, because I’m not surprised,” I reply. “She had every intention on finding a way to have more interaction with Cam.”
Maybe that’s what they were talking about the other day in his office. Regardless, this is his job, and it’s none of my business.
“Yeah, I didn’t see that coming,” Jess says.
As everyone begins to leave, Ariel flashes me a knowing look.
“What are you going to say to Cam?” Jess asks.
“I’m not saying anything,” I tell her. “Lewis spoke to Cam and Lilly about this before she started, and they assured her they could work together without issues.”
“I really believe you can trust Cam,” Jess says. “He’s a good guy.”
Cam is the best guy. Lilly is the one who can’t be trusted.
I look up and see Ms. Lewis and Lilly and the others still talking. I send Cam a text telling him I’m leaving and to text me later.
The sooner I can go home the better.
I’m walking in the door when my phone rings. A nervous feeling hits me when I see Cam’s number. I’ve already decided I’m not bringing up the meeting or Lilly, so I take a few deep breaths before I answer.
“Hello,” I say cheerfully.
“I’m finally leaving the school,” he says. “I thought Lewis was never going to let us go.”
I laugh. “Jess and I bolted out of there as soon as the meeting was adjourned.”
“Lucky,” he exclaims. “How are you? I feel like I’ve barely seen you this week.”
I launch into all the reasons I have for my busy-ness—most of which are valid.
“How about Saturday? Can I see you outside of school?”
Saturday is Eliza’s birthday and one of the most exciting days of my best friends’ lives.
“It’s Eliza’s birthday,” I tell him. “I’m taking her to brunch, and then Mason and her family have planned a big night.”
“Oh—okay.”
I chew on my lower lip. Am I really going to let my fears control me? Or anyone else?
I can’t.
“Would you like to come to the party with me? Eliza’s grandmother is doing the food, and I’m expecting it to be quite an exciting evening.”
“I’d love to go,” he exclaims.
A feeling of relief falls over me. It’s going to be such a memorable night and having Cam with me will make it even better.
