She smiles. “I’ve been thinking about it since you mentioned it the other night.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I really do enjoy it.”

“And just to clarify, I wasn’t suggesting you abandon your students,” I say.

Her expression grows serious. “Serena, I need to tell you something.”

“What?”

She motions for me to sit next to her, so I do.

“You really need to watch your back when it comes to Lilly,” she whispers.

“Oh, I already know.”

She shakes her head. “No, I’m serious. Lilly told me and Kelsey she and Cam are endgame. She says their connection goes deeper than anyone realizes, and they’ve known each other since childhood.”

I sigh. “Trust me, I’ve heard all about their lifelong friendship.”

“I just think you need to be careful,” she reiterates.

“Thanks for the warning.”

“My loyalty lies with you,” she says. “But I’m still playing the game. She’s our new AP, and I don’t want any issues.”

“Absolutely.”

“And if things get bad, take it to Lewis. We all know how she feels about staff drama.”

The door opens, and we abandon our conversation. It’s well known the walls in this school have ears.

Thank goodness Monday is over. It was a messy one, and I haven’t seen Cam at all, which makes it even worse. This isn’t unusual because there are many days our paths don’t cross.

After I send my little angels home, I sit at my desk and send Eliza a text.

Pizza and sugar night?

Not even three seconds goes by before I get a one-word response. Yes!

I have a long list of tasks to do, including catching up on reports, emails, and lesson plans, but I send Cam a text first.

Hey you. Hope you had a good day.

I’m excited to hang out with Eliza tonight. Things are about to change in the most profound way. I know we’ll always be best friends, but there will be a different dynamic moving forward. Eliza will be a married woman, a wife, and probably a mother at some point. This is a major life change from being single friends. I’ve seen it happen with my sister. It’s inevitable, and there’s no stopping it. There is a tiny part of me that feels sad. Of course I’m beyond happy for Eliza—she’s found her happily ever after. Hopefully someday I’ll have mine.

I’m ready to call it a day but decide to stop by Cam’s office before I head home to meet Eliza. When I arrive, I’m shaken to my core by what I see through the large glass window. Lilly is there, and they’re looking at something on her phone. It’s perfectly innocent, but it hits me once again there’s something between them I may never understand. They don’t see me, so I quickly leave to avoid it being awkward.

I stop in the office to check my mailbox, but I’m in a daze. Ms. Wilcox is still there and typing feverishly on her computer. Ugh. I’m not in the mood for her bad attitude.

“Have a good night, Serena,” she says without looking away from her screen. I stare at her in surprise because she hasn’t addressed me with that tone in months.

I stop myself from making a snarky comment about her speaking to me again.

“Thanks, Britney, you too.”
