Page 84 of I Think He Knows?

I hold the door open wider, and he kisses my cheek as he walks inside.

“After staying in my pajamas all day, I decided to clean myself up and get my life together,” I tell him as I do a little spin. “How was your day?”

He sighs. “Definitely not as relaxing as yours. My father showed up at my place at seven o’clock and insisted we go golfing. When I saw him yesterday, he suggested it, and I said yes. I didn’t realize he meant today.”

“Oh no, you must be so worn out.”

“You have no idea.”

“Cam, you should’ve told me. We don’t have to go out tonight.”

He holds up his hands in protest. “No way. I didn’t want to cancel again. And I wanted to see you.”

I grin widely.

“Besides, it’s a school night, so we can grab dinner and make it an early night.”

“Exactly.”

I pick up my bag and my keys, and before we leave, Cam engulfs me in his arms. I hug him back and memorize every moment of being in his arms. For some reason the thought of losing him flashes through my mind, and suddenly I don’t want to let go of him.

Ugh. Why am I doing this to myself?

“I needed this,” he says, holding me in his embrace.

“Me too.”

After we finally let go of each other, he takes my face in his hands and kisses me, sending shivers right through me. Like my sister said, we’re together now, and that’s all that matters.

One thing is for sure, Cam and I always have fun. Whether we’re eating lunch in the staff lounge, sharing school dismissal duties, axe throwing, or at a romantic dinner, we laugh a lot. I’m convinced this is one of the secrets to the happiest relationships. We talk and share funny stories about teaching, our conversation as smooth as ever. After we finish eating and I get a text message from Jess, this reminds me to ask Cam about Leo.

“I haven’t spoken to Leo today,” he says. “But I don’t think Jess has anything to worry about. He’s interested.”

“She said he didn’t bring up seeing her again, so naturally she’s concerned,” I tell him.

“I think he’s being cautious. After his divorce, and then some bad dating experiences, he’s taking it slow.”

I totally forgot Leo had been married. And then there was the short-lived situation that happened with Eliza, which is now hopefully put to rest.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking things slow.” I pause. “As long as there’s progress.”

He nods. “Rushing into relationships doesn’t work, at least in my experience.”

I purse my lips, and before I can stop myself, I mention Lilly.

“How long were you and Lilly together?”

He doesn’t hesitate to answer. “Five years, including our engagement.”

Five years? Holy crap.

“Wow. You have quite the history,” I say. “And you’ve basically known each other since birth.”

Cam gives me a concerned look. “Serena, I’ve told you my relationship with Lilly ended a long time ago.”

“I know you did.” I stop and chew on my lower lip. “Cam, I need to tell you something.”
