Hmm. I’m a little surprised by this too, but I don’t say it out loud.
“Have you talked to Cam?” she asks.
“Not yet. We’re having dinner tonight.”
“Okay.”
“And I’ll definitely ask him about Leo,” I add.
“Thanks.” She sighs. “Why does this have to be so difficult?”
“I wish I knew the answer to that question,” I tell her. “But one thing I’ve learned from Eliza and Mason is things happen when you least expect it. They give me hope.”
“They were good friends first, right?”
“Best friends,” I exclaim. “For ten years. And soon they’ll?—”
I stop because I’m not supposed to tell anyone about Mason’s big surprise. Although Jess barely knows Eliza, so she won’t tell anyone.
“They’ll get married someday,” I finish.
“Wow.” She breathes.
“My point is sometimes we have to be patient,” I say. “Look at how long I’ve been waiting for Cam.”
“I know,” she says. “And Leo and I have only seen each other twice.”
“I’ll talk to Cam and find out if he knows anything.”
“I really appreciate it, Serena,” she gushes. “You’re the best.”
I spend the rest of the day doing nothing other than watching Gilmore Girls reruns. It’s rare for me to take a full day off and stay in my PJ’s. I always try to do something to prep for the week ahead, but today I’m allowing myself to rest.
Cam texts me around two o’clock, and I smile as I read his message.
How are you? Are we still on for dinner?
I don’t waste any time responding to him.
Yes. I’m great, still in my pajamas binge watching TV shows.
He responds immediately.
Good for you! Pick you up at six?
Pajamas, Gilmore Girls, and then dinner with Cam—I can’t think of better way to spend my day.

I finally get off the couch and prepare for my evening. I decide on a fuchsia mini dress and pair it with nude wedges. I might be overdressed, but I don’t care because this is a rare occasion. I’m putting on gold hoop earrings when I hear a knock on the door. Cam’s here, and I can’t answer it fast enough.
When I open the door, I remember exactly why I like him so much. His smile is so infectious, and he has a reassuring presence. You instantly feel safe with him.
His eyes grow wide when he sees me. “Wow—you’re gorgeous.”
“Don’t make me blush,” I wail, covering my cheeks with my hands.
He chuckles. “Sorry.”
