“I’m sorry, Serena,” he says.

“It’s fine,” I say waving my hand. “What’s up?”

He shrugs. “I just wanted to see you and say good morning.”

Heat fills my cheeks, and I’m sure my face is bright red.

“I’m glad you did,” I tell him.

Our gazes lock, and we smile at each other. I wish I could wrap my arms around his neck and kiss him, but there are students everywhere.

“I need to get in there,” I say, peeking into my class.

“I know,” he says. “I’ll see you at lunch?”

“I’ll be there.”

He smiles and takes a few steps backwards before leaving. My Monday morning didn’t get off to the best start, but it’s quickly turning around. Admittedly I’m thrilled Lilly was here when Cam stopped in to see me. Hopefully that’s all she’ll need to see he’s moved on.

Chapter Fourteen

The big day has finally arrived—Celebrate Our School. It’s the event of the season at Eastern Lake Elementary, like the Oscars or national donut day. Emotions are running high, lots of excitement and some nerves. Everyone on staff wants to make a good impression, for the parents, community, and a random member of the school board who might make an appearance.

This whole week has been a blur. The best part was having lunch with Cam, that is until Ms. Wilcox and Lilly started joining us. Ironically the two of them have become good buddies over the past week and decided to join us for lunch. Go figure.

I get up extra early for a Saturday, after setting four different alarms. Since Lilly showed up the other morning, I’ve made it my mission to never oversleep again. Thankfully she hasn’t been back to my class since then. I imagine she has a lengthy to-do list this week because Ms. Lewis takes this event very seriously.

I put on my Eastern Lake T-shirt and a pair of relaxed fit jeans. I spend a little more time than usual curling my hair and doing my makeup since I won’t be trying to manage my little angels today.

After I finish getting ready, I check my phone and find a text message from Eliza, letting me know she and Mason are planning to stop by the event. I truly have the best friends. They don’t have any reason to come other than to support me and my school. Of course Eliza is curious to see Lilly, even if she doesn’t say it out loud. Either way, it’s all for a good cause, and I’m grateful. I purposely left out that Leo might stop by, but the chances of them crossing paths is probably unlikely.

I head to the school early to give myself plenty of time before people arrive. The awesome PTA always puts together a light breakfast spread for the staff, so I don’t have to worry about eating before I go.

It’s going to be a busy and fun day.

When I get to school, I park next to Ariel, who’s still sitting in her car. She’s waving her hands animatedly and holds up one finger asking me to wait for her. A few seconds later she gets out of the car.

“Good morning,” she calls, opening her door. “Are you excited?”

“Yep. Are you?”

“Oh sure. I was thinking we should get a big group together and go out tonight. We’ve earned it after how hard we’ve been working.”

Ha. Why does this not surprise me? Ariel will always find a reason for a social event.

“Don’t you think everyone will be worn out?” I ask.

She gives a nonchalant shrug. “Maybe. But we should reward ourselves after a successful day.”

The day hasn’t even started, but I appreciate Ariel’s positivity.

“I’m sending out a text right now,” she says as we walk into the school. “You’ll come out tonight, right?”

“Maybe,” I say.

“Send Cam a message now,” she demands as she frantically types on her phone. “I’m sure he’ll say yes if you ask him.”

Well, I guess it’s not a secret Cam and are seeing each other. We did show up to the escape room together, and nothing stays under wraps at our school.
