I casually glance behind me and immediately spot Cam. Why am I not surprised she’s staring at him?
“Everything okay?” I ask.
She refocuses on me and leans her head to the side. “Yes. Why?”
I shrug nonchalantly. “You just suddenly seemed distracted.”
She narrows her eyes and throws her hair behind her shoulder. “Not at all. We were talking about other teachers having more difficult classes.”
Hmm…sure. It’s probably better if I just drop it and move on.
“Anyway, I should get back to my room and finish up my day,” I say. “Have a great evening.”
“You too,” she says as she begins walking toward Cam. I make my way back inside, but before I do, I turn to see Lilly chatting with Cam and the other staff members.
For some reason Kara’s warning pops into my head. Ugh. I can’t let Lilly’s presence get to me. She ended her relationship with Cam a long time ago. She’s part of Cam’s past, and hopefully I’m part of his future.

“I think you should call and ask him what he’s doing this weekend,” Eliza demands. “You guys have been texting all week. I’m sure he would love to see you.”
“You sound like Kara,” I tell her.
“What?” she shrieks. “Take that back, I don’t want to sound like your judge-y sister.”
I giggle. As much as I love my sister, Eliza is right. Kara can still be difficult, even though motherhood has mellowed her out some.
“Sorry, but she did say the same thing. You two are really in sync these days.”
“Oh wow, me and Kara giving the same advice. I’m not sure what to think about this. Has hell frozen over?”
I smile to myself. “You’re both just looking out for me, and I appreciate it.”
“I’m joking—sort of,” she says. “I’m glad you and your sister are in a good place. I know how important that relationship is to you, and it took a long time to get to this point.”
“Thanks,” I say. “I know I don’t need her approval, but it’s nice to know she cares. Anyway, how are you?”
“Um, I’m okay,” she hesitates.
“Uh-oh, what’s wrong?” I ask. “I know you well enough to not be convinced by that response.”
She snorts. “You do know me.”
“That’s what best friends are for.”
She sighs. “I’m worried about Mason. He seems off, and when I finally asked him if he was okay, he got frustrated and flustered. It was very uncomfortable.”
I press my lips together. I know exactly what’s happening, but I can’t tell her. Mason is panicking about the proposal and worrying about every detail.
“Maybe he’s just in one of his moods. It’ll pass.”
“You’re probably right.”
“Of course I am,” I reply.
“And I’m right about Coach Cam,” she adds. “So get off the phone with me and message him.”
I nervously chew on my lower lip. “Okay.”
