Hi! It’s fine. How are you?
I hit send and put my phone back in my bag.
“Happy?”
She gives me a smug look. “Yep.”
Thankfully she doesn’t say anything else, so I sit on the floor to play with my nephew.
After I leave my sister’s house, I check my phone. I purposely avoided looking at it so I wouldn’t have to listen to Kara remind me she knows everything about everything. I have another message waiting for me from Cam.
I’m great. Heading to dinner with Leo. I’ll let you know if he mentions Jess.
Jess will be over the moon to hear this.
Oh, yes. Can’t wait to hear. Have fun.
As I drive home, I think about what Kara said. How much nudging does Cam need? And how much is too much? I’m probably overthinking it.
When I come to a stoplight, I find Mason’s number to return his call.
“Hello, do I know you?” he answers.
“Ha ha. I’m sorry I haven’t gotten back to you. I’m the worst, and you’re the best.”
“At least you admit it,” he replies.
I giggle. “Okay, what’s up? Let’s chat about Eliza’s birthday.”
“I’ve already spoken to her grandmother. She’s doing the food,” he tells me. “I rented the venue. Now we just need to make an invitation.”
“I can do that,” I say. I feel a little guilty because it sounds like he’s already taken care of most of the planning. Have I been that consumed with my own stuff? That’s not like me.
“Great… Serena, I want this to be the most perfect night for Eliza. A night she’ll never forget.”
I gasp. “Mason, are you finally making that engagement official?”
He doesn’t reply.
“I will neither confirm nor deny,” he says nervously.
“You are,” I shriek. “You’re proposing at the party? In front of all her family and friends?”
“Actually, I’m not,” he says. “Well, not at the party.”
“Seriously? You’re not giving me any info here.”
“I know. I want to surprise her.”
“I won’t say anything,” I exclaim. “You know me better than that.”
“Yes, but it might slip out, and I want it to be special.”
I smile to myself. Eliza and Mason being together is still surreal. And it’s even more wild to think about them getting married.
“Okay, then give me a few details,” I beg. “You can’t leave me hanging.”
He exhales. “Fine. I’m planning to do it before the party. So she’ll think the proposal is her birthday surprise. But the big surprise will be the party with everyone who loves her. That’s all I’m saying. Is that enough information for you?”
