“Good,” he says. “We can talk more later—if you want to.”

“Okay,” I say softly.

Jess and Leo haven’t even noticed Cam and I have our heads together.

“They seem to be getting along very well,” I whisper, motioning toward Jess and Leo.

“Yes, they do,” he says.

The server arrives with our drinks, and I contemplate throwing back my wine like a shot, although that might make it obvious my mind is on other things. Truthfully, I have no right to be upset since Cam and I are technically only friends. Yes, we’ve been spending more time together, but there’s been no discussion about us officially dating. Cam chose to tell me about Lilly today, and that should count for something. And Jess reminded me I need to just enjoy being here with him. All the other stuff can wait for another day.

Our appetizer arrives along with a bread basket, and none of us waste a second digging in. I didn’t realize how hungry I was until the food was brought to our table. Who knew escape rooms could make you work up such an appetite? I guess panic can do that to a person.

“This is so delicious,” I say. “Is everyone else suddenly super hungry?”

“Yes,” they all say in unison.

“Good, then I won’t embarrass myself while inhaling my food.”

I open my menu and try to decide what I want for dinner, despite stuffing my face with calamari and bread.

“I wonder what Ariel is going to plan next?” Jess asks thoughtfully. “She’s already tried to push skydiving and matching tattoos.”

“Cliff diving, base jumping,” Cam suggests.

“Ziplining? Swimming with sharks,” I add.

“Well, I don’t think I’ll let Serena commit me to any more of Ariel’s activities,” Cam declares.

“Listen, Coach Cam, you knew what you were getting yourself into,” I remind him. “That’s not my fault.”

“I know,” he says with a warm smile. “It’s still fun to tease you.”

Hearing him say this causes a familiar jolt to shoot through me.

Jess and I glance at each other, and she raises her eyebrows. I know what she’s thinking—Cam is trying to reassure me. Maybe he told me everything so he could be open and upfront, especially if we continue to grow closer.

The server returns to take our dinner orders, and I finally decide on the blackened mahi-mahi, rice, and steamed vegetables because suddenly I feel like I haven’t eaten in days.

My phone buzzes a few times, and when I finally look at the screen, I have texts from my sister and Eliza wanting to hear about my day with Cam and a text from Mason about Eliza’s birthday.

I quickly respond to all three of them letting them know I’ll text them later. Although both Eliza and my sister will expect phone calls to be properly updated.

“I finally decided what I’m doing for Celebrate Our School,” Jess announces excitedly.

“Ooohhh, what’s Celebrate Our School?” Leo exclaims. “It sounds fun.”

“It’s a big event our school does every year,” Cam says. “All the classes participate. Performances, art, activities, food trucks.”

“You had me at food trucks,” Leo replies. “Would it be weird for me to show up even though I don’t have a kid?”

“No,” Jess says at the same time Cam says, “Yes.”

Jess glares at Cam. “It’s a community event, so anyone is welcome. There’s a silent auction and a bake sale. A lot of local businesses come and support it. It’s a big deal.”

“She’s right,” Cam admits. “I was kidding. You should come and be ready to spend some cash. It’s all for the kids.”

Leo nods. “I can do that. Will there be a taco truck?”
