Page 25 of I Think He Knows?

“Are we being creepy?” I whisper.

“You mean because we’re staring at strangers? Nah.” He waves his hand.

“Doesn’t everyone people watch?” I ask.

“Yes, if they’re normal.”

I giggle. “Okay, that makes me feel better.”

“You never know, someone might be watching us too.”

“Good point,” I say. “We should probably stop.”

He laughs. “Thanks for inviting me to dinner tonight. I’ve had a great time.”

“So have I.”

Cam stretches his arm along the back of the bench. Admittedly, I contemplate sliding a bit closer to him, but I don’t move from my place.

“Um, Serena, I wanted to talk to you about something.”

I raise my eyebrows. “Yikes. Should I be concerned?”

He laughs nervously.

“Is everything okay?”

Maybe this is it—he’s going to tell me about his romance with the beautiful Lilly Winters.

“Everything’s fine,” he pauses and runs his hand through his hair. “I wanted you to know that I really enjoy hanging out with you. You make me smile and everything is easy—no drama, no stress.”

I plaster a calm smile on my face, but inside I’m ready to explode with joy.

“I feel the same way.”

He moves a bit closer to me as if he was reading my mind a few minutes ago. I turn my body toward him to show I’m open to whatever he wants to talk about or…

“I’d like to hang out more if?—.”

“Yes,” I exclaim more eagerly than I intended.

“Great,” he says, relief in his voice. “There’s just one issue.”

Issue? I can’t think of any.

“Okay—what’s that?”

“Well, we work together,” he reminds me. “And I don’t want things at school to get complicated.”

I nod in agreement. “Neither do I.”

“People will talk if they know we’re spending time together,” he adds.

“Most definitely,” I agree. Oh well, I don’t care what anyone else says.

“At the same time, everyone knows we’ve been friends for a while,” he says as if he’s trying to talk himself into it. “So, what if we continue to hang out, and take things slow?”

My heart sinks a bit hearing this. I’m not sure we could take things any slower at this point.
