I follow his lead and move toward him without a second thought. “Okay the truth is that by day I’m a fun kindergarten teacher and by night I’m?—”
The corner of his mouth curls up into a half smile as I burst out laughing. “Sorry. I tried, but I can’t keep a straight face.”
Cam leans his head to the side. “Serena, I always have so much fun with you.”
I feel my face get hot as my pulse picks up speed. “Thanks. I have fun with you.”
Our eyes lock just as the server returns to take our order. Why do they always have the worst timing? Do they just watch their tables and interrupt at the most vital moments?
“So tomorrow is the big day?” Cam asks after we order our food.
I give him a confused look. “Big day?”
“You know, the exhilarating escape room outing.”
“Oh, I almost forgot about that.”
He holds up his hands. “No way—don’t you even think about skipping it. You’re the one who committed me to another one of Ariel’s wild ideas.”
“That’s right,” I agree. “I wasn’t going to risk my life with only Ariel and the crew to depend on for survival.”
“Smart,” he says. “Just as long as you aren’t leaving me in the trenches.”
“Aww…were you worried?” I tease.
“Very.”
I giggle. “It’ll be okay. I’ll be there to keep you safe.”
“That’s what I was hoping for.”
We gaze at each other, and once again my heart does a flip.
“I’ll do my best,” I say, clearing my throat.
We chat about what to expect at the escape room outing until our food is delivered and I remember how hungry I am.
“How’s the chicken marsala? he asks.
“So good,” I mumble, covering my mouth with my hand. “Your filet looks delish.”
He holds up his fork. “It is. Want to try it?”
I purse my lips. “Maybe a tiny piece.”
He picks up a small piece and puts it on my plate.
As soon as I taste it, I close my eyes to enjoy every morsel. “Oh wow—that’s freaking amazing.”
“Is it better than the chicken marsala?”
I shrug. “They’re both good. Here—try the chicken.”
I cut off a piece and give it to him.
He nods as he chews. “The filet is a little better. Want to trade?”
I give him a confused look. “What—no.”
