She nods. “I ended up with five masterpieces today.”

I laugh. “Very nice.”

That’s our code for when our students draw us pictures.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cam directing traffic next to the bus loop. Of course this causes a jolt to shoot through my body. Per usual, he looks hot in his aviator sunglasses and athletic attire.

“Did you talk to Cam at lunch today?” she asks.

I shake my head. “I stayed in my classroom.”

She gives me a curious look. “Did you do that on purpose?”

“No…” I pause. “I had to catch up on a few things.”

“Are you going to ask him about our new staff member?”

I shake my head. “No. What would I say—people are talking about your ex joining our staff?”

She gives a slight shrug. “Exactly.”

“What are you two gossiping about?” a deep voice calls.

Both Jess and I freeze as Cam approaches us. Oh no, did he hear our conversation?

“Nothing,” I say nonchalantly. “Just chatting about our days.”

Cam gives us a skeptical look.

“Hmm…it didn’t look like nothing,” he says pointedly. “You know I count on you for my Eastern Lake gossip. We miss all the good stuff out in the gym.”

Jess raises her eyebrows at me. She might have the worst poker face of anyone who’s ever lived.

“So, Cam, how’s your friend Leo?” Jess asks casually. Well at least I owe her for shifting the subject and taking one for the team.

“Why do you ask?” Cam asks curiously.

Jess snorts. “I know Serena already talked to you. I was just wondering.”

Cam chuckles. “Leo is doing well. I’ll mention you said hello the next time I talk to him.”

“Yes, please do,” she says. “Anyway, I’ll see you both later.”

She practically sprints away leaving Cam and me alone, surrounded by students who haven’t gone home yet.

“So, I guess I should talk to Leo?”

I smile. “I think Jess would appreciate it.”

He nods. “Anyway, I’m looking forward to our dinner on Friday.”

My heart does a flip, but I refuse to embarrass myself with my excitement.

“So am I.”

“I’m sorry about cancelling on Saturday.”

I hold up my hands. “It’s totally fine. How did things go with your parents?”
