Page 10 of I Think He Knows?

We chat for a few minutes before Ariel slides her chair back to the other table.

Jess gives me a sympathetic look. “We can always count on Ariel to bring the good news.”

“It’s fine,” I say with a shrug. “Cam and I are having dinner tomorrow—I could ask him about this mystery woman.”

A wicked smile spreads across her face. “As long as you don’t forget to mention Leo.”

I laugh. “Of course. I mean the main reason we’re going out is to talk about setting up our friends.”

“At least you’ll have something to talk about,” she offers. “It’s a great topic to keep the conversation going.”

“That’s not a problem for Cam and me. We never seem to run out of things to talk about.”

Jess smiles. “That’s because you’re meant for each other.”

“Ha, if only he’d figure that out,” I mutter.

She pats my arm. “I think he knows—he probably just likes taking things slow.”

Hmm, slow is one way to describe it.

“Maybe he’s being cautious because you work together,” she suggests.

“I know,” I say. “And I understand. Workplace relationships can get complicated.”

Jess holds up her hand. “That being said, he won’t to be able to deny his feelings forever.”

Our conversation is interrupted by the arrival of our food.

“Eliza says the same thing,” I tell her as I pour dressing on my salad.

“She’s right,” Jess insists. “How’s Eliza doing? Is she still living the fairy tale?”

I nod. Eliza and Mason were on a luxurious getaway when they realized their feelings went deeper than friendship. The whole weekend was rather magical, so Jess calls it a fairy tale.

“Yep, she’s head over heels in love,” I say. “And Mason is so smitten. It’s actually very sweet seeing him like this after so many years of knowing him.”

“Is it strange now that your best friends are in a committed relationship?” she asks.

I shake my head. “Not at all. It feels like everything is as it should be. I think deep down I suspected they’d end up together eventually. There’s always been a different energy between them.”

Jess smiles. “Hearing stories like that gives me hope for the future.”

“Yes. Eliza and Mason’s journey to love proves anything is possible.”

“Wow, you must’ve been starving?” Ariel exclaims, pointing to the variety of food on our small table as she drags her chair over by us again.

“Please help yourself,” Jess wails. “I think I went a little overboard.”

“You think?” I tease.

We’re discussing the Celebrate Our School event when I hear my phone buzzing. My pulse picks up when I see Cam’s number on the screen. I quickly excuse myself and hurry away from the table to answer his call.

“Hello.”

“Hey, Serena.”

My heart sinks instantly. I can tell by his tone I’m not going to like this conversation.
