I raise my eyebrows. “Ohhh, what?”
“First of all, none of Cam’s friends liked her,” she tells me. “Leo told me she’s high maintenance and spoiled and she treated Cam like a doormat.”
None of this surprises me.
“Cam wanted to end their relationship long before they actually broke up,” she continues. “Leo said there was a lot of pressure from his parents to make it work. He said they were obsessed about him and Lilly getting married.”
“Yeah, I figured the parents had a lot to do with it,” I said. “Lilly’s mother cornered me and let me know Cam and I will never last.”
Jess’s jaw drops open. “What? When?”
“Right before I came in here,” I tell her. “She told me Cam’s like a son and she’s seen girls come and go over the years, but they always had their hearts broken.”
Jess looks stunned. “Whoa. I don’t even know what to say. Do you think Lilly put her up to it?”
I shrug. “Maybe. Or she just did it on her own. I saw the expression on her face while she watched Cam and me talking.”
“Did you even meet Cam’s parents?”
I nod. “His mom. Lilly introduced us before Cam even had a chance, and then when he tried, they ran off to talk to Leo.”
She rolls her eyes. “They monopolized him for at least twenty minutes.”
I give a shrug. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to let strangers interfere in my life.”
“No, of course not,” she exclaims. “Did you tell Cam?”
“No,” I hesitate.
“But you are going to tell him, right?”
“Yes, of course,” I trail off. Although I’m not sure if I should. I don’t want to cause issues with Cam and his parents. It’s not the first impression I want to make with them.
“Anyway, did you invite Leo to Ariel’s after party?”
She nods. “You and Cam are going, right?”
“We’re planning on making an appearance.”
She grins. “And then you’ll have your own after party?”
I snort. “I don’t know. Honestly, I’m tired.”
“It’s been a long day,” she says. “And we have to be back here Monday morning.”
I groan. There’s a part of me that just wants to go home and crawl into bed.
“Serena, you have nothing to worry about,” Jess insists. “Leo told me Cam and Lilly are long over.”
I give her a grateful smile. “Thanks, Jess.”
We chat for a few minutes, and then she heads to her classroom. I pick up my phone and click on Cam’s number. For a moment I consider cancelling our plans, but then it hits me that Lilly wants me to do just that. She and her mom are trying to convince me to stay away by throwing their lifelong family bond in my face. Unfortunately for them, it’s not happening.
I start typing a message to Cam.
I’m in my classroom. Ready to get out of here whenever you are.
Lilly is not going to scare me away from Cam. I’ve come too far to give up on him now, so I’m not going anywhere unless he tells me too. If Lilly wants a fight, she’s got one.
