CHAPTER TWO
I feel a hand on my shoulder as I drive down the long driveway to Teagan and my place. “Son, I know what you’re thinking. You’re sitting there thinking about my situation with your mother versus yours with this beautiful woman of yours. Trust me when I say they are not the same thing. You and Tee belong together.”
I park the car. Teagan throws open her door and stomps to my side of the car. She flings my door open and reaches in, grabbing me by my shirt and yanking me out of the car. The anger in her eyes is palpable.
“You listen to me, Logan, and you listen well. The only way you’re getting rid of me is by death. Got it?” Swallowing the hard gulp in my throat, I shake my head. I love this woman with every ounce of my being, but she can be a scary, crazy bitch at times. “Good. Now that we are on the same page…” she yanks me closer into her and her lips crash on mine in a fervor of tongue and teeth. Her hips thrust into me, seeking friction from my growing cock.
My dad’s throat clearing interrupts the moment. “If you two want to continue, I can just Uber to a?—”
“Oh, no way,” Teagan says, turning to face him. “Sorry, Mr. Sexton.”
“It’s okay, Tea. Please call me Colton or Dad. Anything but Mr. Sexton.”
We all walk up the stone path to the door and head inside. “Now what?” my dad asks.
“We wait ’til she strikes first,” Teagan mumbles. “Never strike first, but always strike back and hard.”
The next morning, I hear my dad’s phone ringing and within minutes, his shouts “Boom” from the next room. I bolt to the living room and find him disconnecting the call, holding his phone so tight in his hand I’m surprised it doesn’t bend in half. He turns to look at me and, by the concern and rage in his eyes, I know it was nothing good.
“Dad, what’s wrong?”
“That snake strikes fast and hard.”
“What’d she do?”
“She withdrew every last red cent from the bank accounts and closed them.”
“Dad—”
“I know, son.” I knew working with Ryin changed her, but this is a new level of low even for her. I don’t even know this woman anymore. She used to be mom who organized bake sales for the marching band, baked and decorated several to sell or raffle off. Every game just to help us raise money towards the band trips-and now she thinks her shoes are more important and manual labor outside of the office is beneath her. Not to mention she’s drained dad of every last red cent he’s been saving.
The blood drains from my face when I realize what he just said. That was money we were taking with us when we go on vacation in three weeks, the money for the wedding and our honeymoon. Dad insisted on paying for the wedding because he believes in the two of us being together forever.
“She’s doing this to stop me from marrying Teagan?”
“When this new self-entitled Brooklyn gets it in her head that things should be one way, there is no stopping her.”
“Dad, Teagan is it for me and no amount of bullshit from your crazy wife will stop us from being together.”
“I know, son. I’m sorry. I should have given you the money to hold on to.”
“Dad, you had no way of knowing she’d go to this extreme.”
“I need to get to the office to figure this out, so it doesn’t ruin the vacation,” Dad says. “Are you going to be okay?”
“Of course.” I sigh, not sure how much I believe that’s the truth. “Keep me posted on what’s going on.”
“I’ll let you know any new news as soon as I hear it,” he says, giving me a pat on the back.
“Take my car,” I tell him, handing him my keys. I can use my work truck.
As the day wears on, the news just keeps getting worse. My dad’s work colleagues can’t take his case because it turns out one of them is representing my mother. So much for loyalty.
I will just have to work more overtime, but that’s not possible—at least not today. The water pouring from the clouds made my boss, Jaxson, call off the workday on the count of rain. Fuck. My. Life.
I spend the day pacing the house, restless, wishing there was something I could do. I refuse to let my mother win. I will marry Teagan in three weeks, as planned.
I call up my boss. “Are you sure there’s nothing that can be done today?”
