And he was right, too.
Dean was just sawing into those Z’s.
“Is he all right?” I asked.
Levi led us into the kitchen. “Yeah, just tired. I’d say he fell asleep maybe… four hours ago?”
“Jesus,” Hudson murmured.
“So, we’ll save him a plate,” Levi said.
I pointed to the coffee pot. “Does that mean he didn’t make the coffee?”
Levi smiled from ear to ear. “Absolutely.”
“Thank fuck,” Hudson grumbled.
“So,” I said as I pulled out a plate from the cabinet, “is this what it’s always going to be like? The four of us, just dancing around one another and living our lives?”
Levi shrugged. “Is it supposed to be any other way?”
“You know, I was thinking,” Hudson said as he poured us all mugs of coffee, “what would we do about the bed situation?”
Levi grinned. “I’ve seen some mattresses online that can fit, like, seven of me. I say we go with one of those things. The room upstairs looks big enough.”
Hudson brought his mug to his lips. “All of us? In the same bed?”
My eyes volleyed between the two of them as Levi nodded. “I mean, sure! Why not?”
Hudson growled. “Fuck no to that, thanks.”
I threw my head back in laughter. “You guys are nuts, you know that?”
And then, a very tired voice sounded from the doorway to the hall. “Sounds like a party in here.”
I looked over and saw Dean rubbing his eye. “Hey, I didn’t mean to wake you up.”
He waved his hand in the air tiredly. “Nah, it wasn’t you. Just a late night.”
“Has anyone checked on Brody since the attack last night?” I asked.
Dean nodded as he walked over to the coffee pot to retrieve a filled mug. “That’s what I did before I came here last night. He’s pretty much healed up, but he’s exhausted. He said he’d probably sleep most of today and tomorrow away.”
I nodded. “Good. He needs to. We can take shifts peeking in on him to make sure he’s got what he needs to get better.”
“Is something on your mind?” Dean asked.
I sipped my coffee as I sat at the kitchen table. “Something is always on my mind. You’re going to have to be more specific about what you’re looking for.”
Dean sat down in front of me. “All right. Every time your cousin gets brought up, there’s this look that passes across your face. It’s fleeting, but it’s almost like…”
“Trouble?” Levi asked.
Hudson nodded. “I have to admit, I’ve seen that look as well. It’s almost like Brody is off limits, or something.”
I gripped my coffee mug. “It’s not that, no.”
“So, it is something,” Levi said.
