Cadence didn’t twist around to look at him. Instead, she kept her eyes on Kru’s profile. “What did he say?”

“He wanted you to know he had control.”

With a huff of breath, Cadence closed her eyes and replayed the video from Gunner’s phone. She hadn’t even thought about it, she’d been too wrapped up in the chaos. In the videos, someone had been asking him to step in as Gunner had been charging down the hillside, and Kru had. He hadn’t rounded on the men closest to him, he had aimed at Gunner. For them. And then in the thick of it, he had yanked Gunner out of harm’s way. The saber-toothed tiger she’d seen in Damon’s mansion had wanted to kill all of them, and his eyes were completely vacant.

Not today.

Landon was right.

He’d had control.

Anti-poison.

Chapter Eleven

Kru eased his eyes open.

Everything hurt. Everything ached.

He would’ve thought he was dead, except the scent of Cadence was filling up his head.

Dim dawn light was filtering in the front windows, so he could make out the forms of his Alpha, Lucas, and Jenna cuddled up on the couch, fast asleep.

On the floor near the front door, Landon Fuller was asleep against the wall, and Lucia was laying down with her head in his lap. Landon’s hand was resting on her shoulder.

Huh. Weird. Lucia would probably put a curse or something on him when she woke up.

Every inch of his skin hurt.

His stomach growled from hunger and beside him, Cadence inhaled slightly in her sleep and cuddled closer to him.

Cadence.

He studied her pretty face, all relaxed with sleep.

Her hand rested on his chest, and gently, he placed his own hand on top of hers.

She was here.

And he was somehow still breathing. That was a freaking miracle.

Also, fuck Gunner. He couldn’t wait to fight him all over again. Maybe when his body didn’t hurt quite so bad though.

Was it just him, or did it smell like his mom’s casserole in here? He sniffed and his stomach growled again.

“I made you food,” Cadence murmured sleepily.

He looked over at her, and she wore the prettiest sleepy smile on her full lips. Beauty.

He gripped her hand that was under his, then lifted it to his lips and kissed her palm. “Wanna fuck?”

She giggled and tried to quiet it by burying her head against his shoulder. “Boy, those words traumatized me.”

“It’s the best two-word combination in the English language.”

“Yeah, but you texted me that yesterday and you were probably laying here bleeding out, you dickhole. That’s our code word now if we’re in trouble. If you ever text that to me again, I’m comin’ in hot to find you.”

Kru was trying to stifle his chuckles, because it hurt, sure, but he was also trying to enjoy this moment with Cadence before the others woke up.
