“What do you mean? Why aren’t you taking me with you? You said you’d bite me in!” I was breathing hard now, not understanding how they were acting so distant after sharing something so intimate with me. Lance looked over and gave a half smile.
“Sweetheart, stop it. You know we would never make someone like you our omega.” His words stopped time temporarily and I froze. My omega side was suddenly made still with the knowledge that they were giving me the ultimate rejection.
“W-what do you mean? You promised!” My voice shook as I felt my stomach turn. “You told me if I let you be my first, you’d take care of me! That I would be yours!” Lance rolled his eyes as he looked at the others.
“Look, the sooner you realize this, the better. We don’t want you that way. We did you a favor by helping you through a heat cycle. Now you can know that you had a taste of the best pack in town. The best you’ll ever have, really. Packs like us,” He turned to stare at me with a haughty smile, “we end up with the best omegas. Ones from good families with generational wealth, not charity cases from the wrong side of town.” I choked back a sob as my eyes filled with tears, clutching the sheets to cover my body, which I now felt compelled to hide. “We don’t want omegas like you.”
I couldn’t believe how callous they were acting. After everything they had told me, after all the princess treatment they had given me, this was what they were really like? The little bit of pride that was left in me bubbled up to bite back at them. “You're wrong! Someone will want me! Someone better than you! And you’ll regret doing this to me!” The entire pack belted out in laughter in unison as I stood there, covering my body with the used sheet. Lance tilted his head and looked down at me.
“You really are naïve. We are the best you’ll ever have. And you need to scurry along now, and don’t bother contacting us again. It won’t end well.” Fury boiled through me, and I threw the sheet down, exposing my nude body as I marched over and pointed my finger in his face.
“You’re wrong! I’m an omega! Someone will want me!” He looked at me with a mixture of disdain and pity. “No omega, you’re wrong.” I stepped back, my mind spinning with what was happening to me.
“No one will want you now.”
My body convulsed, and I realized I had tears running down my face. I was hyperventilating in my sleep, and it was waking me up. As my body slowly fought its way back to consciousness, I smelled the calming scent of oak mixed with honey surrounding me. A low, gentle voice grounded me as I tried to escape the memory of my first rejection. “It’s alright, omega. You are safe. You can wake up.” I gulped down air, my vision blurred with tears as I tried to figure out where I was. A large hand suddenly appeared and wiped the tears away from me with a tissue. “Take nice, deep breaths. Everything is going to be okay.” His words somehow made it past all my panic. I couldn’t do much except listen anyway - my body was on a bed, but my hand was enveloped in his and my other one was stuck at my side.
“What’s going on?” I asked, my voice scratchy.
“You’ve been asleep for a bit. Would you like some water?” His sweet, gentle voice was calm and in control. I felt safe now, and I nodded as I let the memories fade away to the back of my head. His hands moved, and suddenly my head was being cupped from behind as the stranger brought a water bottle to my lips. I took a sip, and it was the tastiest water I could remember drinking. I must have been out for a while. When I was done hydrating, he laid my head down again on the pillow. He was positioned behind me, just out of sight. I wanted to move and see more of him, but right now I was still too tired to do anything but lay there. “How are you feeling, omega?” I took a deep breath, my mind clearer.
“I feel tired, and my head hurts a little.” I felt him adjust his chair behind me, and I could sense how large he was.
“You’ll feel better in a bit. I think you need some food and some sunlight.” I nodded and felt his hand reach for mine again. “But for right now, I just need to know a few things. Can you answer some questions for me?” I wasn’t sure where I was, but I didn’t feel like I was in any immediate harm. “Okay.”
“Good. When you feel uncomfortable or want to stop, I want you to squeeze my hand. Can you do that for me?” I nodded. “Alright. Can you help me out and tell me your name, sweet omega?” I was feeling a little better now that I was more awake.
“I’m Bella. Where am I?” I suddenly wanted to look around and see where I was. It didn’t feel like a hospital, even though I had an IV in my arm.
“You’re in a safe place. One of the safest places you could be, actually. And where are you from, Bella?” I frowned. I was technically from Goldpine, but I wanted to stay as far away from that town and those memories as possible.
“I’m from Haven. Am I back home?”
“No, you’re not. But I’ll see what I can do to get you home safely. What do you remember last, Bella?” I thought back, trying to block out the memory that had come up in my dream state.
“I was… I was attending a ball. I was at the Darlington Ball!” My memories started filling in, and I flashed back to the extravagant meals, the fancy clothing, the panic I’d felt when I realized no packs wanted me. My heart rate started up again as I remembered the more subtle rejections that happened that night, my perfume spiking and taking on a bitter tinge as my emotions took over.
“It’s alright, little kitten. Take it easy. You’re doing so well, I’m so proud of how strong you are.” His praise made me forget the disappointment of everything momentarily as I felt a warmth flow through me.
“You are?” His hand gently squeezed mine.
“Of course. Can you be good for me and answer just one more thing for me?” I nodded.
“Do you remember what happened after the ball?” I thought back. I remembered holding back tears, heading toward my room, and Celeste’s dress…
“I remember… I remember you.”
Chapter 21
Kian
We watched the monitor, all of us too shocked to say anything. I’d seen Jameson in action plenty of times before. He was one of the deadliest, most effective hired guns in the Eastern Province. He was incredibly strong, ruthless and downright scary when it came down to his precision. If he wasn’t part of our pack, I’d be terrified of him. When he interrogated people, the majority of the time they would crack just from fear before he’d ever have to resort to violence. But with this omega, he was as gentle as he was effective. Question after question he couched in an encouraging tone, only using the slightest alpha command to get the truth. The omega answered happily, with no real hesitation. In fact, she seemed almost giggly with him as she held his hand. Even when she revealed that she recognized him as her kidnapper.
“You remember me?” He asked in a humorous tone. Humorous. Normally he’d have turned to the camera and nodded in an acknowledgement that we needed to take out a witness. This time, he smiled and rubbed her hand with his thumb. “How can you be so sure?” He asked as she tried to roll to see him.
“Your voice. I remember your voice.”
“Are you sure? What do you think I said?” He teased, and I sat back in my chair in disbelief. My right-hand man was acting like a teddy bear with this omega. What had she done to him?
