I noticed that Nyx said nothing, just a blank look on her face like she was a million miles away and not there with us on her front stoop.
She was hiding something.
It must be big or fuck, it could be small and she just didn’t know how to trust me with the information. I fucking hated this. Hated that she didn’t feel that trust, but how could I blame her? What exactly had I done to earn it? I would.
“Yeah. Know she doesn’t like bein’ without it. So, I wanted to bring it to her,” Screech continued, not particularly lying but not giving me the whole truth by any means.
What I noticed most from this was Nyx never lied to me. She didn’t refute it or acknowledge it, and in doing that she didn’t lie to my face. That was something. What exactly, I was still working out. But hopefully that was a small stepping stone.
I’d find more out when we were alone.
“I’m gonna head out,” Screech said, looking at Nyx who reached out and squeezed his hand. From his stunned gaze, she hadn’t done that before. And that little gesture meant the world to him.
Did she know he wanted her?
Surely, she did?
A blind man could see it.
And since she kept going to him, did that mean she felt something for him?
No. She didn’t act like she had anything but friendship feelings toward him.
“Thanks, Screech. I really appreciate it,” She told him, and I saw the first smile from Screech.
“Anytime, Nyx.”
He took off, and Nyx opened the door, walking through and flicking on all the lights. The alarm started beeping instantly, and I went straight to the panel and entered the code. The noise stopped.
“How do you know my code?” she asked me, removing the bag she wore across her body on my bike. If she didn’t have her phone, I wondered what else she had in there. Her gun?
“Overrode it and went through the code from the server in the cloud,” I told her as if it were nothing for me to go into her personal shit and do what I wanted. She had to know this was me.
Had to know the man I was.
I wasn’t going to change. That much I knew about my life.
That didn’t mean I wouldn’t treat her like the queen she was and protect her with every fiber in my being.
Her hands went up in the air in frustration then fell and slapped on her thighs as she walked through her living room. “Of course, you did.”
She made me chuckle as I followed her, and we moved into the bedroom where I took off my cut, gun, and cleaned my pockets out from the random change and garbage and put everything on her lonely dresser.
“Make yourself at home,” she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm as she took her boots off, one at a time and tossed them in the corner, hitting the wall on the way.
“I will.” I sat on the bed and pulled my boots off too. Except I didn’t toss them to the side. One never knew when I’d need them in the middle of the night, on the fly. Instead, I set them by the door of the room.
I pulled off my shirt but left my jeans on. As much as I wanted to be balls deep in her, she needed to give me a few answers. All I had was more and more questions after the more time I spent with her.
My mind went back to the conversation I overheard between Screech and Nyx while I stood outside the door.
I pressed my ear to the door.
“Screech, I can’t do it anymore. Here, take it,” she said to whoever this Screech guy was. If he touched her, I was going to kill him. How the fuck did I not know about this guy when I searched her?
“What’s wrong? What happened?” the deep voice answered, and I wanted to know the answer to that too.
“It’s too much. I’ve been up all night watchin’ it and…” she paused. “Look at me, Screech! I haven’t slept at all. I’m a fuckin’ mess. The notifications are tied to the cloud, and I can’t get it unlinked.”
