“You told Sienna I was missing?”

“Of course I did. She’s very worried about you.”

That was something I didn’t believe for a second. More like worried that her walking womb was no longer available. I immediately scolded myself for the thought. I wasn’t a mean person like Sienna, but I didn’t feel like being nice about her, either. She didn’t deserve that after the way she’d treated me.

My gaze darted away from the floor towards the double doors leading into the ward. They opened and there he was, walking gingerly through them. Thane had a pained look on his face, but at least he was walking. That had to mean his injury wasn’t too bad.

The sight of him made my heart thump in my chest. Even with us both being dishevelled and in need of a wash, he was still so damn handsome. Arresting almost. I couldn’t help wanting to go to him. To be near to him. Everything changed between us during our time in the tent. And all I could focus on was the fact I wanted him with an ache that threatened to tear me apart.

“Listen, Dad, Thane’s done with the doctor, so I have to go.”

“Oh okay, well, let me know when you’re coming home.”

“Sure, will do. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I hung up and handed the phone back to Callan. There was curiosity in his brown eyes. I didn’t stop to say anything to him. Instead, I rushed over to Thane to see if he needed help.

“You okay?” I asked when I got close.

Without waiting for a reply, I tucked myself under his arm so he could lean on me. Being next to him gave me a sense of safety. The unfamiliar surroundings and noises didn’t feel so scary and overwhelming knowing I had him to shield me from them.

“Aye, am fine, Kit,” he mumbled, staring down at me with those dark green eyes of his.

His cheeks went slightly red, making me hide a smile.

“What did the doctor say?”

I led him over to where Callan was standing with our stuff.

“I had an x-ray tae make sure there’s no a break. Just have tae rest it and see how we go. I cannae drive though, no yet.”

Callan must’ve overheard that because he grinned.

“Shame, ye hate other people driving ye around.”

“Fuck off, Callan.”

I untucked myself from Thane just as Callan dragged him into a hug.

“Ye scared the shite out of me, Thane.”

“Am alive, ye get.”

“Dinnae pull a fucking stunt like that again, ye hear? Ye’re making me sprout more greys with all the worrying I dae aboot ye.”

Thane let out a grumble and extricated himself from Callan’s arms.

“Dinnae let yer husband hear that.”

Callan snorted and rolled his eyes.

“Aye, he’s happy ye’re back. Says I can shut up aboot ye noo.”

Thane gave him a nod and scratched his beard.

“Tell him am no sorry for stealing all yer attention.”
