Page 46 of Promise to Break

I look around, trying to see if there's anyone nearby who could help. I see a few girls who I don't know standing some fifty feet away in what I assume is fear or disbelief. I refuse to think they're enjoying the show. Never mind who Killian is—he's human, just like everyone else.

"Please wake up…" My voice is weak due to my yelling and fear. I'm afraid for this fucker.

"What happened?" Liam asks.

Startled, I look up. I didn't even notice him approaching. I get up from the wet tiles, ignoring my frozen state as I blink and look into his eyes. I don't see the same emotions that I feel. He looks freaking calm. What the ever-loving fuck?

I look back at Killian. He opened his eyes. He's breathing. He'll be okay. It's Killian, after all, the god of war, just like Ares. His deadly eyes, however, are lifeless, as if the bloody water took from him all the fight.

"I need help, you morons. Can't you see he's in shock?" I don't recognize the girl who's speaking. Is this fearful girl really me?

"Keep it quiet," Liam urges like that's what's important right now. I notice Raven in the background. She looks horrified, as if her worst nightmare has come to fruition. I will worry about her later.

"Killer." Liam says the word as if his best friend is simply bathing under the moonlight. "Get up."

"Get up? Are you for real right now? Do something. Call for an ambulance." My voice is full of concern.

"No need. Just call the twins. Birdy, you know what to do." Raven nods and runs off—I assume to do as Liam asked.

"What the hell happened? How did he end up in the water?" Liam glances around before looking down at his friend again. "We need to get him away from here."

"No shit," I mutter, trying to ignore the pounding in my ears. I dare to look at Liam. This is The Joker. I think I know what he needs from me, and it's not the truth. Killian can't take this hit to his reputation. This is something I know.

I saw what happened. It was as if Killian surrendered to the water, allowing it to take him away as if he couldn't move or had no desire to.

"The ground is wet, and he must have hit his head pretty hard before he landed in the water." Liam nods once, as if acknowledging me for the first time. I am not a fool. Raven speaks about reputation and what people will think all the damn time. Serena is all about appearances as well.

"Liam…" Raven says abruptly, and I turn to look at Killian again. He looks green. The shock is wearing off. He's going to vomit. I get down on my knees, ignoring the pain. He looks at me with what I can only imagine is rage, but I ignore him. All my concentration is on is helping this asshole of mine. I move his head to the side. Letting his body do what it needs. His vomit soils the red water.

"There you go. Let the water out," I whisper.

"Fuck," another male voice speaks, but I don't pay him any mind. My complete attention goes to the man in my arms. "Yeah, just like that." I hold him as gently as I can. I don't think he has any bumps on his head, but I'm not a doctor. My knowledge of first aid came from necessity.

"You can use one of our guest rooms," the unfamiliar voice says. I don't look at him, but I assume it's one of the twins. "Maybe he needs mouth-to-mouth."

"She already took care of it. I need you to clear the path." Liam explains.

"Yes, I know. No scandals. If you need a doctor, just say the word."

"He doesn't."

"It would be great," Liam and Raven say at the same time.

"I don't need a doctor," Killian says, his voice hoarse and barely more than a whisper. "It was just a bump on the head. This wild child is stronger than she looks."

I never thought I would smile at the sound of his low, soothing rumble. It's not the same as always, but to anyone not obsessed with it, he sounds the same. Indestructible.

"Are you really okay?" I try to be as quiet as possible, but the glare he gives me indicates they heard. Fuck. I really think he needs to see a doctor.

"I'll take the room, though. We stink of pool water." Killian stands as if nothing happened and reaches for my hand.

"Not now, Ugly Bird." Liam's cruel voice stops Killian in his place. One glare from him is all Liam needs to take a step back.

"You." Killian looks down at me as he speaks. I'm still on the ground, wet and freezing. "Come with me."

"I'm not going anywhere with you," I state. Getting up, I almost slip on the wet tiles, and the urge to punch him comes back with a vengeance.

"Molina, the room," Killian orders and proceeds to drag me by the hand. This time, I don't stand a chance.
