Evelyn entered behind me and placed her hand on my shoulder. “Maybe we should go for a walk?”
I shoved her arm off and stormed up to Nate, whose lips unfurled into a lazy smile as he leaned back against the couch.
“What’s wrong, Skyler?”
“You know what’s wrong! What did you do with the body?”
Nate tutted under his breath before swiping his tongue over his bottom lip and trailing his heated gaze down my body as if picturing me back on my knees. “I think your imagination is running away with you.”
Reaching out and grabbing the back of my thigh, he pulled me down onto his lap. I braced my hands on the back of the couch and tried to climb back off, but he held me in place with his big hands on my hips.
“I bet you can still taste my cum on your lips.”
While he kept his voice low so only I could hear, I still looked around. Alice glared at me from across the room, but Nate diverted my attention when he swiped my hair behind my ear with his fingertips.
He cupped my chin and pulled me closer to his waiting lips. I pushed back, refusing to fall under his spell that easily. “You’re a murderer.”
“Says the girl who left me for dead.” He nipped my bottom lip and I melted into him, his tongue tangling with mine, his breath dancing over my lips and chin. I pushed back, but his hands fisted my hair and he deepened the kiss. Nate could kiss. He kissed like he was solely created for this one task.
“Get a fucking room,” Max laughed, entering the living room with a fresh crate of beer from the flatbed of his truck. Nate ignored him, smiling into our kiss and rendering me stupid.
When I finally managed to tear free and clear the haze, it was too late. My lips tingled and throbbed from his hard kisses. Noticing, Nate dragged his thumb over my parted lips as though he couldn’t help himself.
“So one moment you accuse him of murder, and then you kiss him?” Harper said, approaching me with her hands on her hips. “Have you always been such an attention-seeking bitch?”
What?
I climbed off Nate’s lap and faced her. “Your boyfriend is missing, and you accuse me of seeking attention?”
Scoffing, she arched a brow and flipped her hair off her shoulder. “You were dry-humping Nate after saying he killed Lewis.”
“Because he fucking did,” I shrieked, pointing at Nate, who looked so fucking amused by my outburst that I wanted to slap him.
Harper exchanged a look with him, then stepped close enough for me to feel her minty breath, mixed with alcohol, dance over my lips. “You need professional help, Skyler. You’re sick in the head.”
Alice laughed nasally from her spot on the dance floor.
Max, Lily, and Evelyn watched in silence.
“When was the last time anyone saw Lewis?” I asked, directing my question to all of them while staring at Harper.
“Take some more drugs. Maybe it’ll shut you up,” she said, shouldering past me and walking out of the room.
Seated at the edge of the cliff at the back of the property with my feet dangling over the edge, I swallowed the lukewarm white wine in my mouth.
Maybe I would feel less claustrophobic if I could at least see the stars, but it was too cloudy. The tall trees to my left swayed in the cold breeze, their branches bare of leaves.
I took another swig of wine straight from the bottle, then winced. Why the hell did someone bring wine to the Halloween party? Disgusting shit. But it was alcohol, and I needed something stronger than beer to numb my rising panic.
I knew what I’d seen was real. It didn’t matter that my friends didn’t believe me or that none of them would listen to what I had to say.
Footsteps approached behind me, and I took another swig of wine as Max’s spicy cologne filled the air. He dropped down, nudging my knee with his. “Don’t you want to party with the rest of us?”
With my lips pressed to the glass rim, I snorted.
Max swiped the wine bottle and took a large sip. Then he grimaced, saying, “The fuck is this?”
“Cheap wine.”
