“Better?” he asked as he kissed the top of my head.

“Not that much better,” I said breathlessly. “I really need to get you naked.”

He grabbed my wrists as I reached to take off his T-shirt. “Relax, Anna,” he said in a husky voice. “My control is hanging by a thread right now, and there’s no way I’m going to lose my shit out here. The last thing I want to do is get you completely naked where someone could see you. It might be my land, but there are people who have permission to come here, including my brothers.”

“Shit!” I said in a disappointed voice.

I really didn’t want his brothers to see me naked, either.

Kaleb wrapped his arms tightly around my body, and I laid my head on his shoulder.

“Then why did you do that?” I asked curiously.

“Because I needed to at least touch you,” he answered, his voice graveled and raw.

I could hear the edginess in his tone, but his touch was gentle as he stroked his hand up and down my back in a comforting motion.

I ached to touch him, give him the same pleasure he’d given me, but I squashed that desire for now.

I was intimately close to him, and that was enough for now.

“Thank you,” I said softly.

“For giving you an orgasm,” he teased.

“No. For always trying to protect me.”

Kaleb was probably the most selfless guy I’d ever known.

He always had my back, and I trusted him completely.

That was what made our relationship so special.

“That’s an instinct I’ll never be able to ease up on, Anna. You’ll have to get used to it.”

I smiled.

I was already used to it, and having someone who cared enough about me to watch out for me and my best interests was addictive.

I silently hoped I’d never have to see what it was like to be without Kaleb Remington watching my back.

Kaleb

“Yo! Kaleb! Did you hear a word that I just said?” Tanner asked as we sat in my home office later that evening.

“I heard you,” I lied. “I’m fine with going ahead with the acquisition if Devon is on board, too.”

I vaguely knew what he was talking about, and I knew he wanted this company.

I didn’t need to hear all the details, but I trusted Tanner’s judgment.

Fuck! It wasn’t like me not to have all of my focus on a pending project, but after what had happened at the river earlier with Anna, I was distracted.

“You didn’t hear a word I said,” Tanner accused. “I didn’t ask for your permission. I asked for your input on how to go about the acquisition. Where is your head tonight?”

I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. “I’m sorry. I guess I’m off my game today.”

Tanner smirked. “Does that have anything to do with the beautiful woman in your music room who’s discussing her awards show performance via a virtual meeting?”
