“Let’s hope your mom likes me, even though I’m not exactly dressed for dinner with someone I’ve never met,” Anna said as she walked into the kitchen that evening.

She’d been concerned about the casual wardrobe she’d brought with her, but she looked absolutely gorgeous.

I’d told her not to dress up because family dinners were always casual.

She was wearing a pair of dark jeans, and a bright red, flowy blouse that looked stunning on her.

Anna normally didn’t use heavy makeup in her daily life, but she’d used a heavier hand with it tonight, and that fuck-me scarlet lipstick she was wearing made her lips even more tempting than they had been earlier.

I was fucked.

My dick got hard immediately, and I had to look away from her to keep myself from kissing her senseless all over again, even though I hated myself for kissing her the first time.

She hadn’t really wanted that embrace, but she’d responded so sweetly that I’d been hard-pressed to let her go.

She was vulnerable, and I despised myself for taking advantage of her state of mind earlier.

I’d wanted her, and I’d taken what I wanted without thinking about what Anna might need from me.

Well, that shit wasn’t happening again. I had myself firmly in check tonight, and it was going to stay that way.

“You look stunning,” I told her honestly. “For Crystal Fork, you’re all dressed up. And my mother will love you. Nobody dresses up for a casual dinner here.”

I was wearing a pair of jeans and a gray, wool sweater, which was about as dressy as my mother saw from me unless I was heading for the office.

She nodded as she dropped her lipstick in the purse she was using.

Anna had been a lot less talkative since I’d kissed her, and I hated that.

Her less than exuberant mood was even more proof that touching her had been a huge mistake.

I didn’t know what I’d been thinking when I’d given in to the urge to kiss her.

I’d looked down at her, felt her shapely body against me, met those killer eyes of hers, and I was completely screwed. There hadn’t been a rational thought in my head at the time.

She’d been so damn sweet that I’d lost my shit for a few moments.

However, I had instantly regretted that when it was over and I saw the confused look on Anna’s face.

Things between us had shifted after that kiss, and the last thing I wanted was for Anna to be unsure about what she was going to get from me.

It only took us all of five minutes to get to my mother’s house once we’d left my property. Anna fidgeted a little as we pulled into the long driveway of Mom’s ranch.

“I’m a little nervous,” Anna confessed as she fussed with her hair. “I am about to meet a really famous artist.”

I chuckled. “You meet far more famous people all the time.”

Hell, she was one of those superstars, but you’d never know it judging by Anna’s reaction right now.

“That’s different,” she said anxiously. “They’re performers like me.”

I laughed this time because I couldn’t stop myself.

I didn’t mingle with A-listers or music superstars, but if I had to guess, she was probably a rarity, a woman who thought nothing of her celebrity status.

“She’s an artist,” Anna added reverently when we finally reached my mom’s home.

I had to force myself not to laugh again.
