Trouble In Peaks
(33 days to end of year finish line, 7 days to new position)
43. Tamar
Gideon hadn’t arrived last night after his party. She rose early, concerned about the dogs.
After agonizing over it, she decided that despite the PI’s request to keep her findings secret, she would tell Gideon about them. Danny did many deals in the Berdiplast share. It could be nothing, it was probably nothing, but she needed to warn Gideon, her boyfriend about it. Now that he was going back to his father’s company, he could deal with it discreetly from the inside.
Tamar knocked again and again, hearing the dogs’ barks from within. This wasn’t like him, leaving Shemesh and Giddy unattended. She used her spare key, glad that he made her take it. His apartment was indeed empty, he didn’t spend the night here.
Where are you? She texted Gideon. He didn’t answer and was last seen in his WhatsApp yesterday afternoon.
She walked both dogs, then took them back to their kennels in Gideon’s place, texting the dog walker to pick them from there.
I took the dogs out. She texted Gideon so he wouldn’t worry. Canine logistics out of the way, she got ready fast and wasn’t late arriving at Peaks, to the joint meeting they had scheduled with Nathanela to announce that Gideon was quitting Peaks.
Tamar spotted N entering her office and ran to her.
“Hey!” she barged in breathlessly.
“Tamar! It’s okay, you’re in time for the meeting you asked for. Where is Gideon?”
“I don’t know. He was at a party last night, so maybe he overslept.” Tamar checked her phone again. No texts.
“I heard that your brokerage project is a big success. How did you like working with Danny Golan? I must confess that I never liked him much,” Nathanela said.
“I think Danny is dirty. Boosting share prices for his clients,” she blurted, immediately wishing she had kept her mouth shut.
“You... what?” N cried out. She got up and closed the door.
She explained, once again, about the short phone calls that made Yelena suspicious and their findings.
“We should take it to Yehuda.”
Of course, Nathanela would want to take it to her boss.
“I showed it to an investigator who said nothing can be done.” She’d made a huge mistake talking to N.
“You did?” N’s usually warm eyes were frosty. “You should have come to me with this before going to an outsider.”
“Wait Nathanela, we could wait with alerting Keynan. Gideon and I need to talk to you about something.”
She didn’t want to make Gideon’s announcement for him. Where the fuck was he?
“That’s the right thing to do, Tamar. We can’t wait for Gideon.”
Nathanela’s extension rang.
“Yes, Sonya, thank you. We’ll be right up.”
“What?”
“Keynan wants to see me about something concerning the chief analyst position. Come with me.”
This couldn’t be good. Shit, shit, shit. Tamar’s heart thrummed a beat as they made the quick elevator ride to the management floor.
