“Logan!” An oddly familiar voice booms from the other side of the door between loud knocks. “We know you’re home! Open the door right now! Goddammit!”

Logan still doesn’t move. So, I do instead. The banging on the door continues to get louder and louder as I close the distance.

I open the door and am almost hit in the face by the fist knocking.

“Oh, I’m sorry, young man. Who are you?”

The man before me is a stern portly man. Streaks of gray infect his receding hairline. One look at the man, and it’s clear he’s never smiled a second in his life. This is Logan’s dad.

Behind him stands a frail, timid woman clutching her purse close to her body. Her gray hair is pulled back in a tight bun. Logan’s mom.

“We’ve actually met before,” I say. “At the –”

“Oh, right, of course,” Logan’s dad interrupts. “I remember you, Ryan.”

“No.” What an asshole. He’s met me probably a dozen times and doesn’t even know my name? “Ethan.”

“Doesn’t matter,” he says. “I’m here to see my son. Where is Logan?”

But he doesn’t wait for my answer. He simply looks past me for the first time into Logan’s apartment, where his son is still standing, frozen.

Logan’s parents briskly push past me.

“Logan, we have been calling you non-stop since Monday,” Logan’s mom shrieks. “Why didn’t you pick up?”

“I-I…” Logan starts to stutter.

“The way we showed up unannounced seems a lot more pleasant now, doesn’t it, Logan?” Ryan asks with a smirk.

“No smart comments out of you, young man,” Logan’s dad says, pointing a stubby finger at Ryan. “This is a family matter. It does not concern the pair of you.”

“Well, Logan might as well be our family,” I say. “So, it does concern us.”

“Do you two know?” His mom wails. “Do you know what he’s been up to?”

“Oh lord,” his dad groans. “You two are the ones doing it with him. Aren’t you?”

“What’s going on?” Ryan asks.

“One of my golf buddies saw you four at the hotel,” Logan’s dad explains. “He told me everything.”

Oh shit… Logan’s behavior is making a lot more sense.

“We’re all adults here. What –” I try to say.

“It’s not natural!” Logan’s mom shrieks. “This type of perverted debauchery is not how we raised you, Logan. This is not the life we wanted for you.”

“Wow,” Ryan says with a smirk that could only mean he thought of something that only he finds funny. “You two aren’t about to give us the ‘It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Eve and Steve and Jim’ speech, are you?”

Logan’s parents glare at Ryan but then return their attention to Logan.

“What happened to that nice girl you were seeing a few years ago?” Logan’s mom asks, tears streaming down her face. “I liked her. She would marry you, I bet. Why couldn’t you have just stayed with her?”

“Hell, son, you could have any woman in this city,” his dad says. “You’re handsome. You have money. Why do this? Why break your mother’s heart by settling for sharing a woman with two other men?”

“Hey, he is not settling,” Ryan interjects. I can tell Logan’s dad struck a nerve there. “Jade is the –”

“This still does not concern you, son!” Logan’s dad yells.
