I set my bag on the seat next to me and take out my laptop. As I wait for it to boot up, I take a sip of my latte. I taste the cinnamon immediately, surprised at how amazing it actually is. I peek over at the barista, who’s using her free time to take selfies in front of the coffee grinder.

At least she can make a good latte.

Once my laptop is ready, I check my emails. It’s Friday, so I’m not anticipating much, but my boss did say she was sending over some stuff for me to look over.

As I’m reading the email she sent me, a group of girls walk into the café. They’re so loud that it’s hard not to eavesdrop.

“I heard it’s going to be unlike anything downtown LA has right now.”

“Yeah, but don’t they say that every time?”

“They do, but this is different. The guy who’s opening it owns like three nightclubs in New York City that are super well known.”

“It better be worth it. I spent my entire paycheck on a new outfit for this.”

I glance over at the girls, who all appear to be around my age. Three of them, all dressed to perfection. I can’t help but feel a little jealous. It’s been months since I was able to hang out with girls my own age like that. Even before I moved, Kayla and I were way too busy to get together for a night out.

Before I can stop myself, I stand up and make my way over to the girls. They’re standing in front of the register, staring at the menu. The barista is nowhere in sight.

“Hi. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to intrude, but I heard you guys talking. I was wondering, are you talking about a new nightclub?”

“Oh, my God, yes. Do you know anything about it?”

“No, I don’t. I just moved here.”

“Oh, well, the grand opening is tonight, and we’re going to check it out. I think it’s going to be the next hot spot.”

“You should go!” one of them says.

“Yes! If you do, definitely come find us!”

“Thanks, I will. What’s it called?”

One of them reaches out a hand, palm up. “Let me see your phone. I’ll type in the address for you.”

I smile, pulling my phone out and unlocking it before I hand it to her. Maybe everyone in LA isn’t so bad after all.

“Thank you!” I tell her.

“Oh, you’re so welcome! The dress code is supposedly very strict, so make sure you check out the website.”

“I will!” I say as she hands me back my phone.

“Hi, what can I get for you?” the barista asks, taking the girl’s attention away from me.

I walk back to my table and grab my laptop, shoving it in my bag. There’s no way I’m going to get any work done now.

I head outside, already dialing Kayla’s number.

“Twice in one day?”

“I know, but I just had to call you. I just found out about this new club opening tonight in downtown LA, and I seriously wish you were here to go with me.”

“Oh my God, are you going?”

“Actually, yes. I think I need to. I heard these girls talking about it, and it just felt like a sign. And you should see this place. I’m looking at their website right now and it looks insane. Definitely nothing like the clubs we have in Colorado.”

“Stop! You’re making me jealous!”
