The thought races through my mind over and over again. All the possible outcomes, each one worse than the last, hit my brain like a wrecking ball.

“Logan!”

I’m shaken out of it as Ryan’s hand clamps down on my shoulder. He’s looking at me with concern on his face. Behind him, I can see Ethan and Jade with the same look.

“Logan,” Ryan repeats. “You okay? We’ve been calling you. The room is ready.”

“Oh…” I respond. “Good. Let’s go drop our bags off.”

“Are you okay? If something is wrong, let us –”

“I’m fine,” I snap. I look back behind my shoulder and scan around the lobby. I guess this place isn’t as safe from prying eyes as I had hoped.

The rest of the day goes by in a blur. I know we go down to the beach at some point. We make use of the room’s giant jacuzzi bathtub. But the details are all lost to me.

Every spare moment, any lull in the day is an opening for the worry and fear to reenter my head. I don’t even think I say a single word at dinner.

I can tell they are all noticing it from me. But I say nothing and keep checking over my shoulder for any more eyes. How can I even bring this up to them?

This was all finally starting to feel right. Everything with Jade was perfect. But I just had to run into the one old man here that golfs with my dad, hundreds of miles away.

“Logan?”

I’m snapped out of my trance again, but this time with a calmer voice and softer hand. Jade sits down next to me on the couch in the penthouse suite. Her hand rests on mine.

“Logan? Are you okay?”

I look at her. The soft features on her face have never looked so beautiful. She hasn’t even been here a full day, and Jade’s skin is already glowing from all the sun.

“Yeah, Jade. I’m fine. Thank you.”

I look away from her, not able to lie while looking into those enchanting eyes. Suddenly, I notice that we’re alone.

“Where are Ethan and Ryan?”

“They went down to the hotel’s gym to get a workout in. Now, don’t change the subject. You’re not fine.”

“Yes, I am, Jade. I promise you. I’m fine.”

Jade grabs my face and pushes me to look her right in the eyes. She holds me, not letting me look away.

“Logan, you’ve barely said a word since we got to the hotel. You snapped at Ryan in the lobby. You didn’t touch your dinner. If something is bothering you… I understand not wanting to say anything in front of Ethan and Ryan, but you can talk to me. You can trust me. If something is wrong, I want to help you.”

“Jade.” I squeeze her hand but still don’t look at her, because I’m about to lie again. “Everything is fine. I promise you. I’m just tired from the flight. We’re still going to have a great time here. Don’t worry about me.”

“Are you sure?” From her tone, I know she doesn’t believe me. She’s trying to get me to crack.

But I won’t.

“Yes. Now, let’s go join them at the gym. Can’t let them be the only ones all sweaty, can we?”

Jade solemnly nods, and I take her hand to lead her out of the suite.

Maybe talking all of this out would make things better. Explaining the situation to the three of them could lead to a way to fix everything. Or it could just make everything worse.

My own bullshit almost ruined this for everyone once before. Bringing this before them could just end up making it so much worse for all of us. I just don’t know.

The one thing I do know is what I’ve known for a long time now. For Logan Walker, when it comes to happiness, everything is limited. This was just a matter of time.
