Page 451 of Unexpected Ever After

Nausea is starting to kick in again and I lean back on my couch and try to calm my breathing. The foggy good times have completely worn off now, and I’m left with what feels like the flu. Of course, that irritates me because I’ve been cautious not to catch anything. Mazie hands me a glass of water and sits beside me on my couch as she studies me.

Her blonde hair falls all around her shoulders, pretty pink, plump lips and gorgeous dark eyes—well, aside from the fact that one of her eyes is bright red and she’s holding a tissue against it.

“What happened to your eye?” I ask, taking in a few deep breaths because I feel like I’m about to have an asthma attack.

“Nothing. I’m fine. Just poked myself by accident.”

I have a brief memory of trying to touch her cute button nose in the lobby and missing, and I groan. “Oh, fuck. I’m sorry. I don’t know what happened.”

“Tell me the name of your dentist. I’m going to call him and ask if this is a normal reaction to laughing gas. I’ve never seen anyone be so out of sorts.”

I hand her my phone and open my contacts, bringing up Dr. Rooney’s number. “Before you hit call, I should tell you…I dated his daughter for literally three or four weeks. We had nothing in common and she sort of forced me to end it. I think he might be angry and may have purposely given me a bit too much laughing gas. I’ve never even had a filling before today, so I’m not certain, but he sure seemed to give me a lot.”

Her mouth drops open and she pulls the tissue away from her eye. “Well, that would be highly unprofessional. I mean, did you get her pregnant and then kick her to the curb?”

“No. But would that make it okay for him to drug me if I did?” I squeeze my eyes closed because my head is pounding now.

“Aidan.” She snaps her fingers in front of my face and my eyes shoot open. “Tell me what happened with his daughter, and I will decide how much venom to spew when I call.”

I proceed to tell her the whole mortifying story about Hortance and Evangeline and she’s falling over from laughing so hard.

Great.

I’ve clearly been drugged for not wanting to partake in a threesome and now the girl I’m actually interested in is laughing her ass off at the situation.

“It’s not that funny.”

“It’s a little funny. But he’s an asshole for taking it out on you.” She pushes to her feet and holds up her finger.

I let my eyes fall closed again as I hear her raging on the phone about medical malpractice as she insists on getting Dr. Rooney to come to speak to her. She gives him an earful about how sick I am. How inappropriate it is that he overdosed me on laughing gas. She threatens a lawsuit, and I can hear him frantically trying to talk himself out of it. I hear her ask all sorts of questions about what to expect for me now, and more raging and shouting happens before the talking stops.

“Here, take these.” She’s sitting beside me again and hands me two pills. “Ibuprofen for the headache.”

“What did he say?”

“Well, he claims it was an accident, but he is covering your bill for today and offering you free dental for the next year, so I’d say he must feel guilty.”

“Fuck no. I’m not going back to that jackass again.”

“I told him that. So, I had to be resourceful,” she says, with a wicked smile on her face. Damn, she’s cute.

“Meaning?” I ask as I tip my head back and swallow the pills.

“He’s currently ordering us steak and lobster to be delivered from Bruno’s down the street, and I requested a chocolate-covered fruit basket for you while you recover.”

I shake my head with disbelief. “You got us dinner and fruit? He drugged me. That’s hardly fair compensation.”

“Well, it’s laughing gas. It would be hard to prove in a court of law.”

“I’m a goddamn attorney,” I say, before shaking my head. “You’re probably right. It’s best I’m free of him and his crazy-ass daughter. It’s my mother I’m worried about.”

“Why?” she asks, her dark brown eyes wide and curious.

“We’ve been going to him since I was a kid. She won’t be happy that she has to find a new dentist, but she’ll lose her shit if she finds out he drugged me.”

She rubs her hands together mischievously. “What will she do?”

“I don’t know, but her mama bear instincts are second to none.” I lean back and laugh again because the whole thing is ridiculous. “I will be sending a legal letter over to his office. At least attempt to scare the shit out of the guy.”
