Had he meant to kiss her?

Women threw themselves at him all the time, and while Jane knew she wasn’t an eyesore, she certainly wasn’t perfect like most of the women in LA. She had many, many flaws, and that was even without the obvious issue they couldn’t escape.

She saw the turmoil behind his eyes. He seemed to be fighting an inner battle.

A spark of hope flared in her chest, pushing back the fear rapidly wrapping its claws around her heart.

“Aren’t you going to eat? I was thinking of putting on a movie. We could watch it together?”

She blurted the question out, but immediately regretted it. What was she doing? Why was she glossing over that kiss when they should be talking about it like adults?

She waited for his answer, sweat forming at the base of her neck.

“I have to go. I need to go over my scenes for tomorrow.”

Whatever hopes she’d had of them spending time together sank like a stone.

“Oh.”

She didn’t trust herself to say anything more.

His brow furrowed with thick lines. He regarded her with an unfathomable expression.

“I’m sorry about the kiss. I shouldn’t have done that.”

She reeled at the sharp sting of his words. This was stupid, it was just a kiss that shouldn’t have happened. No big deal. She needed to get a grip on herself.

“It was nothing, don’t worry. I’m a big girl.”

She forced another forkful of food into her mouth. She couldn’t taste the food that now felt cloying and heavy, but she’d be damned if she’d let him know that.

Logan wanted to say more, but in the end, he lowered his gaze to the dog that was staring up at them.

“Enjoy your dinner. Loki, come. Let’s leave Jane in peace.”

He reached the doorway and paused.

“Adele will be here in the morning. She’s arranged something for us tomorrow night. I should have mentioned it earlier, but it slipped my mind.”

If she tried to speak, Jane’s voice would betray her feelings. She gave a curt nod of her head and held her breath.

By the time she let it out again, he was gone.

What a fool she had been to think he would be genuinely interested in her!

She was nothing but an employee, like Kitty. Sure, he cared for her, but it was only the kind of care that any decent person would have for someone in her position.

It was possible he just felt sorry for her. She had nothing and no one, after all. She was about as empty as they came.

She put down her fork, her appetite gone.

She cleared up the mess in the kitchen on autopilot. Washed the dishes, pots and pans by hand, even though there was a state-of-the-art dishwasher she could use. Put away the leftovers, then took a bath.

When she emerged and went to the kitchen to make a cup of tea, she spotted another one of those Kitty gift baskets sitting outside the front door.

She brought it in to find the latest iPhone inside with an apology from Kitty for forgetting to give it to her earlier. The phone had already been activated for her.

She checked the call log. No messages. No missed calls.

No one in the world who was missing her.

She changed into her nightdress and got into bed. However kind Logan had been to her, it was clear she didn’t belong here.

This was just a fairy tale, but it would be over as soon as soon as she regained her memories or their contract was up. If she was going to protect her heart, she had to learn who she had been, as fast as possible.

Before Logan had a chance to break it.
