One of the key points that had stuck through her research was that a person with amnesia should try to go about their lives experiencing every day things in order to jog the memory.
While staying home might feel like the safest thing to do, it wouldn’t be productive, and would only cause the sufferer to take longer to recover from the entire ordeal.
She needed to go around the neighborhood. Visit the grocery store. Simple, everyday things.
Emboldened by her decision, she left the pool house. She walked through the gardens, enjoying the fresh air and the cheerful rays of the sun until she came to a curved stone path lined by rosebushes which opened up into the main residence.
The back of the house had a large terrace with a fire pit and a circle of comfortable-looking chairs surrounding it. A long, banquet style table with an outdoor kitchen overlooked a white rock wall, which at first glance seemed a strange feature, until she saw the projector hidden in the beams of the roof.
The wall was an outdoor home theater, and she imagined, a stunning place to entertain in the evening. An ancient wisteria tree hugged the back of the house with its branches, as clumps of purple flowers trailed down.
She could see straight through the folding glass doors that opened into the living area beyond. Out of the folded doors came a bundle of energy as Loki greeted her with exuberant excitement, barking, yipping, and whining, all at once. She caught him in her arms, almost knocked over by the full force of him.
“Glad to see you’re in a good mood as usual.”
“He’s too young to know any better,” Logan said behind her.
He was glad to see she had more color in her face today, though she still had that initial edge each time he spoke to her. He’d noticed it when they had met again, for the second time, though she wasn’t aware of it herself.
It was almost as if something about him made her unconsciously wary.
He’d put it down to one of the odder reactions famous people could receive, but it didn’t ring true in her case, especially as she hadn’t even known who he was initially.
“How are you feeling?”
“Better, thanks. I’m sorry for the trouble I caused yesterday.”
“There was no trouble. You don’t have to apologize.”
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m not sure what happened, but I’m sure it won’t happen again. I probably hadn’t eaten enough.”
He didn’t think a lack of food would induce a panic attack, but he left it alone.
“If you’re not happy with the selection Kitty left for you, you can always request whatever you need.”
Jane’s eyes went round. “Are you crazy? That fridge is full of amazing food.”
“That you are apparently not eating.” He pointed out the obvious.
“I’ve actually just inhaled two giant muffins, and they were delicious, so you’re wrong about that.”
He laughed, suddenly. A loud, booming laugh full of life.
“Well, good. It’s what it’s there for.”
“I was actually thinking of going out today. I have some things I’d like to get.”
He frowned, looking concerned. “If Kitty has made a mistake or gotten things that aren’t suitable, you can just let her know and she’ll fix it.”
“Kitty has been amazing. Everything in that closet is stunning. It’s just, as beautiful as it all is, I just feel like I would like to choose my own clothes. I know this might not make much sense, and I don’t want you to think I’m being ungrateful, but… I didn’t choose any of it. I’m not sure why that is important to me, but it is. As ridiculous as it seems, I’d really like to go out to a store and buy a few things for myself.”
She waited for the inevitable blowout her suggestion would cause, knowing that it was coming. How could it not when he must have spent a small fortune on her already?
Logan thought over her question, wondering why picking her own clothes would be so important, when it suddenly came to him.
She had no memory of who she was. She didn’t even pick her name. But she could certainly choose her own clothes.
“Of course. I should have thought of that, myself. You’ll need money.”
