She was lying on a soft pillow of bliss, her body spent.
Bright sunshine as sunny as her mood poured into the room, drenching her with its warmth. She could still feel Logan’s mouth on her, as he kissed and nibbled, until it had driven her wild with abandon. She could even feel him licking her cheek now, panting heavily into her face.
This seemed… odd.
She forced her eyes open and was met with the full force of Loki’s exuberant love. Having finally managed to climb his way onto the bed, he couldn’t have been more overjoyed. She pushed his wet nose from the side of her neck.
“That tickles!”
Her response only made him tackle her again until she was forced to move him onto her chest. He laid down on her, nose only a dangerous inch away from her face, delighted by this full-on attention.
The bed beside her was bare, though still warm from the heat of Logan’s recent body. She could hear the jets of the powerful shower going. Steam billowed from the bathroom, curling along the carpet toward her. Sighing happily, she stroked Loki, letting the sound of the shower and sea outside relax her.
For the first time since she could remember, she felt like a real person and Logan had given that to her.
The shower stopped. Logan’s feet padded to the doorway. When he emerged clad only in a towel, his body gleaming and surrounded by steam, she felt a tug inside and was surprised by the need in her.
Seeing that she was awake, a slow, sexy grin appeared on his face when the sun decided to dip behind a cloud, casting his face in shadow.
And for a split second Jane saw a flash of another man’s face instead.
One that filled her with utter terror.
It was gone in a moment, but those eyes… they had looked at her with such a seething rage that all her nerves screamed out. Those eyes had gone now, but she could still feel the hatred they held for her.
She sat up, sending Loki tumbling with a whine of protest.
Her face was a study in shock that left Logan’s heart hammering. She looked as if she’d seen a ghost — one that had driven the fear of God into her.
“What is it?”
He crossed to the bed, wrapping a wet arm around her. She was as tense as a drawn bow.
“It wasn’t your face. For a moment there, I saw someone else. A man. I’ve seen him before and… God, why am I’m so scared?”
He rubbed her back, his mind racing at the possibilities. “Was it a memory?”
“I don’t know. Sometimes, I think I remember things, but then it turns out that it’s just part of a movie I’ve seen. It’s not clear.”
“Like the eggs?”
She nodded, blonde hair tumbling around her face. He brushed away the strands that had fallen into her eyes. “Yes.”
“I might know of a way that can help you to get your memories back if you’re willing to try? I didn’t bring it up before as I didn’t think you were ready, but, it seems too important to wait any longer.”
She chewed on the corner of a lip, unsure where he was going with this.
“If it’s not clear to you by now, Jane, I’m crazy about you. Whatever we discover about your past, we’ll handle it together.”
Her heart did a happy dance. Up until this moment, she hadn’t been truly aware how alone she had felt, even with his help. They’d both had that wall between them, though for very different reasons, but just hearing those words from him now. It was everything. She had him now: he would be there for her.
“What were you thinking?”
“I know of a hypnotist. She’s popular with celebs for losing weight or getting clean. I think we should get in touch and see if she can help you.”
She didn’t hesitate to answer. “It’s worth trying.”
