They were having such a wonderful time that she knew she was falling for him. But that was a dangerous, reckless, ridiculous thing to do. She was no one, and he was out of her league. She had absolutely nothing to offer him, not even her history.
But that winning smile that had set millions of hearts on fire was now directed at her.
And she was helpless to resist.
Wrapping her arms around his neck, she held onto him tightly, hoping that they could stay this way, forever.
Several hours later, with her feet beginning to hurt from the shoes, they sat by a water fountain under the light of a thousand twinkling stars. Jane kicked off her heels and massaged her sore toes.
“I’ve never really understood how feet can be erotic, but looking at you rubbing yours, I’m beginning to change my mind.”
She stopped immediately, a blush staining her cheeks, and stared at him, uncertainty in her eyes.
“Relax, I’m not going to jump you right here… unless you want me to? Could get messy.”
As he made no move toward her, she knew he was having fun at her expense.
“You’re terrible,” she finally replied.
“On the contrary, I’ve been told that’s not true, but since this is clearly making you uncomfortable, I will be a gallant gentleman and change the conversation. Let’s see… ask me anything and I’ll tell you the truth.”
She gave him a level look.
“Are you sure you want to play this game? I could run off and sell your story to the highest bidder tomorrow.”
“I trust you. And you’re also under contract, so I’m not particularly worried.”
“Well, in that case… Have you always known you wanted to be an actor?”
He nodded. “Yes, since I was a kid. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.”
She thought for a while. “Why have you kept Loki if you’re not particularly fond of dogs, or didn’t even want one in the first place?”
“That’s on Adele. She thought the public would like me more if they saw me as a responsible dog owner. She gave him to me so we could have lots of photoshoots of us together.”
“Surely, you could just as easily do the photoshoots without actually keeping him?”
Logan blinked as if the thought had never crossed his mind. “Well, he was already with me. It’s not like I don’t have the space or time to take care of him, and, outside of the shoe thing, he isn’t the worst company in the world…”
He trailed off, embarrassed by the admission. Jane had to hide her smile. The man had clearly become attached to his puppy, even if he didn’t want to face the fact himself. She waited a moment, wondering if she should ask the real question that was on her mind.
“How many women have you truly loved in your life, and who were they?”
If he was taken aback by the question, he didn’t show it. With a knowing smile, he answered, “One. So far, she has been the only woman to have completely stolen my heart. Not only is she beautiful, she’s strong and fierce where it counts, but soft and gentle despite suffering many bitter disappointments in her life. She is, to this day, an angel amongst men, and I worship the very ground she walks on.”
The love that came from him was palpable, as was the sudden, jealous knot in her stomach. She had asked, needing to know if he was capable of such love, but now that she had her answer, she didn’t feel quite as she had expected.
“Are you talking about Ellie Godwin, your ex?”
Logan almost choked on his tongue from laughing.
“Why on earth would you think that?” A knowing look fell across him. “Wait, let me guess. Those magazines you keep denying that you read.”
She shrugged, unapologetically. “You can’t blame me for thinking that. They said you were head over heels in love with her…”
“Until I cheated on her?”
There was that raised eyebrow again. She was starting to think it might be his default expression.
