“Then we are done here.” She turned her attention to Logan. “You’re all sorted?”
He saluted her smartly, earning a flinty glare.
“I’ll see you both later. Try not to mess anything up until then.”
Logan cleared his throat against the sudden silence.
“Are you clear on what’s happening? If not, I can have my assistant walk you through it?”
So this was how it was going to be. No mention of that kiss or the feelings that had come with it.
It was all work.
She nodded. “I’m going to call a friend to see if they will be able to come with me to the store.”
He frowned. “I thought you didn’t know anyone here?”
“It’s a new friend.” The call was answered within a few rings. “Hello… Clare? This is Jane. We met at your store the other day.”
The other woman’s voice bubbled down the line.
“Jane! I’m so glad to hear from you, how are you? Any news?”
“Not yet.”
Sympathetic noises came down the line.
“Give it time, I’m sure they’ll figure it out. Are you free to grab a coffee sometime? I hope that’s why you’re calling. I haven’t stopped thinking about you since we met.”
“Actually, I need help with something that I thought you’d get a kick out of it.”
“What is it? I’m all ears.”
“I need to pick out a dress for a charity ball… but I’d like your professional advice if you are able to come? It’s late notice, I’m sorry to say, but I was only made aware of this myself, late last night.”
She shot a look at Logan. He looked briefly guilty and made no effort to hide the fact that he was eavesdropping on the conversation.
“I’d love to help! When and where were you thinking of going?”
“Well, that’s the thing. The appointment’s for an hour’s time. It’s at the Armani Privé store.”
Clare’s gasp of excitement could be heard clear across the room.
“Are you kidding me?! Oh my gosh, I’ve driven past so many times but never been inside. But, an hour?”
“I know. It’s crazy, I shouldn’t have called. Who gives people an hour’s notice? It’s so tacky of me.” What a way to ruin what could have been the start of a great friendship.
“Hey, that’s fine. I’m surprised more then anything. Luckily, I not at work today. I do have a hot yoga class, but I can easily cancel that. So yes, I can meet you there. I’m so excited. Thank you for thinking of me, Jane!”
“It’s me who needs to thank you for doing me this favor.”
Jane was ready to ring off when Logan tugged on her arm. “One second, Clare.” Covering the phone, she asked, “What?”
“How did you meet this woman?”
“At the store, where I bought my clothes the other day.”
Logan’s brow arched high. “In the Grove? She’s a sales assistant you met in the Grove? How do you know you can trust her?”
