My eyes snap up to his. I glower. “No. You’re not touching me.”
He laughs but it’s humorless. “Again, you have no choice in the matter. I will fucking touch what’s mine when and as I please.”
“Touching me without my permission? That’s called rape, Nico. I didn’t take you for a rapist.” I know I should stop provoking him, but I can’t stop.
His eyes glimmer, a sadistic smirk curving his lips. “Call it what you like,Tesoro. I will touch you when I please and you will like it. And what’s more, you will fucking thank me for it.”
My body shakes with the force of my anger, tears filling my eyes. “I hate you.”
He grins. “Good. Your hate is what will get you through this and make you stronger in the process,Emilee.” The taunting way he says my birth name sends a shiver up my spine.
“Don’t call me that,” I snap.
“It’s your name, yes? I have to give it to you, Tesoro, you did well to hide that from me. Not even my PI found out who you were when I had him look into you. It’s impressive really. You covered your tracks well. This time included. It took me a year to find you even with all the resources I had at my disposal.”
“How did you find me?” my lips wobble with the question.
He grins triumphantly. “The how doesn’t matter. I told you before, I would always find you. Told you that you could never hide from me. I wish you had listened. You would have saved us all this inconvenience and I wouldn’t have missed my son being brought into the world.” The accusation in his tone makes me recoil. I know I should not engage with him right now, but I can’t help but taunt him further. After all, he has uprooted my life.
“I managed to hide for a year.” I shoot back, ignoring everything else he is saying.
He watches me for a long beat, his blue eyes flickering with malice. “Yes. You did. But I found you in the end,Tesoro. And that’s all that matters. I win. I will always win. Remember that when you are burning with so much hate for me, and the thought to run again crosses your mind. Just know that I advise you against doing anything like that again. Because if you do? Next time, I will kill you.”
Pure ice sweeps through my bones and I hold Romeo closer to my chest. I believe every word of his threat. I may be the mother of his child, but Nico will not hesitate to kill me if I don’t follow his rules.
Swallowing, I search his face for any sign of the man I once knew but come up empty. Turning away from him, I look at my son.
He is my world, the reason I need to stay alive.
And no matter what Nico puts me through, I need to remember, I am doing it for Romeo.
***
Clutching an irritable Romeo to my chest, we disembark the jet. My eyes go wide at the line of black SUV’s waiting for us. I pause, my heart pounding in my chest when the reality of the situation hits me. Fuck. Not that I would dare try after what Nico said, but there really is no way out of this. A firm hand hits the small of my back, startling me.
“What is wrong with him?” I glance up at the sound of Nico’s voice to find him frowning down at our son.
I blow out a breath, looking down at Romeo. “He’s hungry. He is due a bottle.”
“So why don’t you give him one?” he deadpans, shooting me a droll look.
Irritation surges through me. I have looked after him this long without Nico’s help, he does not get to just come in and treat me like I am an idiot that doesn’t know what she is doing. Glaring, I snap out, “Because he won’t drink the milk that I expressed when it’s cold. I have nowhere to heat a bottle. I was going to breastfeed him–”
He cuts me off before I can finish. “No. You will not get your tits out in front of my men.” His words are final, but he is delusional if he thinks I’m not going to feed my hungry son.
My jaw drops open, and I can’t help the laugh that bursts from me. “If you would let me finish, I was going to say that I was waiting for some privacy. I can’t not feed him, Nico. It doesn’t work like that. He needs his milk.”
His jaw clenches and he jerks his head toward the cars. “Come.”
He strides to the SUV in the middle of the convoy, rounding the vehicle and opening the driver’s door. Within seconds, I see a man step out of the car and when he turns, I can see it’s Christopher. Meeting my gaze, he dips his chin, flashing me a small smile, but doesn’t speak to me.
“Ocean?” Nico barks and my head snaps to him. Moving around the vehicle, he pulls open the passenger door waving his hand for me to get inside. “Car. Now. Feed our son and then we will be on our way.” His tone leaves no room for argument and this time I won’t. Romeo needs feeding and Nico has made it so that can happen.
Sighing, I move toward the vehicle and slide inside, staring at him when he makes no moves to shut the door. My throat tightens as he watches Romeo and emotion consumes me. Despite the circumstances, I can’t regret that Nico has met his son. Had things been different, we could have been a family. But he ruined that by lying. By having a damn fiancée. With the reminder, anger surges through me.
“Can you shut the door?” he doesn’t miss the bite in my tone.
His eyes narrow in on me. “Don’t push it,Tesoro. You are in enough trouble as it is.” I go to respond but he shuts the door before I have a chance.
