“But he will hurt you,” I grit out.
She smiles, like she has it all figured out. “That is why you will insist on some conditions. That if they want the marriage to go ahead, then they will have to accept a new agreement. That will include me taking two of your men as my personal bodyguards. You will also make sure that I am allowed a cellphone to speak with you whenever I like. And that I can visit you at least twice a week. That way, you can make sure he isn’t abusing me.”
I mull her words over, my jaw clenching when I realize what she will have to do if I allow this. “You will have to fuck him. He will expect you to produce an heir.” I growl, my lips turning down in disgust at the thought.
She shrugs as if it’s no big deal. “I will have our family doctor put me on double birth control. I will get the shot and implant. I want to be sure I am covered and there is no chance of me getting pregnant.” I grimace at her words, but it makes sense. She smiles weakly. “Let’s do this. And when you get the evidence you need, you can pull me out of there.”
My jaw clenches, but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Ever since those cryptic words Vadim spewed, I’ve been wondering whether the Romanos are the ones involved with the Russians. I don’t particularly want to put my sister in the line of fire, but it’s the only way to have someone on the inside, and if I can get them to agree to the conditions she mentioned, then at least I know he won’t attempt to abuse her… physically at least. I shake my head again. “No. I won’t put you through that.”
Her spine snaps straight. She glares at me. “You can and you will. I will go to them myself if I must. But it will be easier with your help and support.”
My jaw flexes, nostrils flare. I exhale, shoving a hand in my hair and pulling at the strands. My gaze flickers to Dante’s stone. Fuck.
What do I do, brother?
Tell me what to do.
I close my eyes. Dante would never allow this to happen, but I also know my sister well enough to know that she will go through with this plan, whether I like it or not. I can’t win in this situation unless I lock her up like a prisoner, and after everything she has been through, she does not deserve that.
My gaze locks on my sister’s. Her blue eyes are filled with a plea. She wants to do this. But what scares me more than that is I can see the emptiness in her, the resignation, bleakness and recklessness since Dante died. She is willing to go into the lion’s den, willing to put herself at risk because she doesn’t care what happens to her. I should say no for that reason alone, but it will only push her further away.
The only way I will ever consider this madness is if the Romanos accept the new conditions of the agreement, and if they don’t, the whole thing is off no matter what my sister wants.
With gritted teeth and a whole lot of reluctance, I give her my answer.
“We have to get them to agree to the terms first.”
The End.
For now…
