I sighed. “Yeah, I'll take care of it. I don't want to risk anyone else getting hurt.”
“You shouldn't go alone,” Cruz warned.
“I'm not sending any of my men in to handle this after what she did to Brady. It is not worth the risk.”
“It's not worth the risk of losing you, Emmett. Don't be stupid. Let me go. I'll take the rifle, and she’ll never even see it coming.”
“I can handle that myself. You stay and help Sam.”
“We’re going to be a few hours stitching him back up. He’ll need to lay low for a few days to a week afterwards then, barring no complications, he'll be safe to shift and let his wolf tend to the rest of his wounds.”
“That bad?” Cruz gulped.
“That bad,” Sam confirmed. “Tonight could be touch and go. Plus, if he develops a fever then we could be in trouble. As long as infection doesn’t set in, I'm optimistic he'll make a full recovery.”
Anger boiled my blood. This should never have happened on my watch.
“Stay here and help Sam. I'll get Austin over to guard the door and field any questions. I'm going to handle this now before the sun sets. I can't risk her creeping around in the dark taking out any more of my boys.”
“Be careful, boss.”
“I will. And we'll all sleep better once this is over and behind us.”
When I got to my horse, Will was waiting there on his.
“Not now, kid.”
“But I can help. She doesn't affect me like she does others. I think it's because my wolf hasn't come in yet. Normally I wouldn't admit that, especially to you, but it's true. I wasn't drawn to her the way the guys were, like they were in some sortof trance. And I don't want anything to happen to you, boss. Let me come with you, and I promise I'll have your back.”
The kid had balls. I'd give him that much.
“Come on, but you do as I say, or it'll be the last time you go out for a long time.”
“Yes, sir.”
He smiled.
“And wipe that grin off your face.”
“Yes, sir.”
He tried his best but his eyes still sparkled with happiness.
I rode to my office and dismounted to grab a rifle. Will followed.
“Do you know how to shoot?”
“Yes, sir.”
I sighed and then tossed him a rifle and a box of ammo.
“Don't load it until we get there. The last thing I need is for you shoot your horse or something.”
“No, sir. I would never do that, sir.”
“Enough on the sir shit, kid. This isn't the military.”
“Yes, s… Okay. I'll try.”
