“What?” she asked.
“Nothing,” I lied, because to me it was most certainly something.
I knew the knock on the door was either Thomas or James, or both.
“We just need to ask her a few questions,” James yelled from the other side of the door.
I growled.
“Open the door, Emmett,” Thomas ordered.
Before complying, I opened a drawer and tossed her a shirt to wear. My wolf and I were far too worked up still to have anyone seeing her naked.
“Remind me to take you shopping. You need some clothes of your own.”
She stopped and stared at me with a precarious look on her face. I didn't have time to question her about it before another knock sounded.
“I said, give us a minute,” I barked.
“It's okay. I don't have anything to hide. I don't even know what all the commotion is about. Why are the cops here?”
“Hold on. They won't leave us alone until this is over.”
I opened the door and let Thomas and James in.
“Close it behind you,” I told James.
Situating myself on the bed, I patted it for Paige to join me. She did and leaned back against me. I wanted to wrap my arms around her, but of course I couldn't.
“Hi Paige,” Thomas said.
“Hi,” she whispered.
I relayed the story she had told me about her whereabouts.
“It's possible someone was following her. I'll send a team out to check,” James said. He immediately pulled out his phone and shot off a text.
“I'm sending the trackers out as well,” Thomas advised.
James typed in something else, probably warning his men of the trackers, and then put it back in his pocket as his attention returned to us.
“When you left here yesterday afternoon, did you happen to make a mess of the place first?” James asked.
I scowled at him, but he shrugged.
“I have to ask,” he insisted.
“Of course I didn't. Why would I do that?”
“When Emmett arrived home, the house was trashed. Cabinets emptied, dishes broken, couch overturned, completely trashed,” he explained.
I could feel her tremble against me.
“It's okay,” I reassured her. “If you did it, that's fine, but I already told them it wasn't you.”
“It wasn't,” she said softly. “Does that mean someone was here?”
“We suspect it was the same man my girls saw creeping around here the other day. We still don't know who it is, but James and I both have teams out searching for every possible lead.”
