Page 46 of His Wild Mate

I groaned. “Is that what everyone’s calling her now? A siren?”

“Pretty much,” he confessed.

“Paige is fine.”

“I mean, come on, a siren is badass,” Ruby insisted. “I like it, and I can't wait to meet her.”

“A siren lures unsuspecting men to their death. How is that badass?”

“Look at all you fools, all banged up and bruised. I bet you didn't even get a look at her and you lost your shit like that. Badass.”

I groaned. “It was terrifying, not badass. You're insane. She was so scared; I doubt she’ll even come out of her fur today.”

“And you left her all alone?” Ruby's face told me she was already feeling a little protective of my new mate. It made me relax just a little, reminding me that not every person in Collier wanted her for their own personal use.

“She's fine, and she did shift,” Clay surprised me by saying.

“She did? How do you know?”

“Winnie sent me a group pic. She's even smiling, so you can relax.”

He passed me his phone and I saw Paige surrounded by Lily, Winnie, Kate, Katherine, and Angel on the couch. My heart fluttered at the sight. Conflicted emotions raced through me.

“Lily was supposed to keep an eye on her, not throw a party at my house.”

“Stop scowling. Those girls are her closest allies here and you know it. They're welcoming her to the family, Emmett. It's not a bad thing.”

He couldn't possibly understand. After what had happened, I didn't trust anyone around my mate right now. If I could lock her away in the closet she's so fond of just to keep her safe, I would. It had taken a lot for me to trust Lily to protect her today, and she invited all the Six Pack mates over, which meant that all the rug rats were there too. Paige wasn't used to being around people, and I couldn't imagine how overwhelmed she was feeling.

With a growl, I jumped up and ran all the way back to my truck, jumped in, and sped home.

Paige

Chapter 12

I was finally relaxing with the ladies and enjoying myself. It may have had something to do with the amber colored liquid Lily kept pouring in my glass. I'd never tasted anything like it. At first I thought it was grape juice that had gone bad, but the warm sensation it caused to flow through my body was nice.

They spent hours telling me stories about the boys. They seemed like a fun group, and they really seemed to accept me for who I was. I had never laughed so much. And for a moment, I thought maybe I could do this, stay here, and be a part of something, like maybe I had found my Pack.

A scream outside had us all jumping up. Kate stayed back with the kids as Winnie passed little Sean to her and then they ran towards the door as I started retreating towards the bedroom and the safety of Emmett's closet.

The door burst open and I immediately shifted, leaving a pile of shredded clothes in my wake. A low warning growl emanated from me, but one look from Lily had me shrinking back. I never turned my back on them as I slowly backed down the hallway. But when I saw Cammie run in with Carter in her arms and Audrey fast at her heels, I did relax just a bit.

“What's wrong?” Lily asked.

“We saw a man outside. He was peeking in the windows,” Audrey blurted out.

“I didn't get a good look at him. I had to get the kids inside first,” Cammie told her mother.

That was my exit cue as I raced for the bedroom and hid deep in the back of the closet. The Alpha order hadn't worked. They were coming for me again. Staying here was never going to be safe. It was stupid of me to believe I could ever have a normal life.

I couldn't settle my thoughts and started to pace. My head was foggy and my body overheated. I couldn't think straight right now.

Then suddenly my wolf started to relax. I didn't know why until I realized there was a male voice added to the female ones down the hall.

Mate, my wolf alerted me to Emmett's presence.

“Call Thomas. There's no one out there but we can probably pick up his scent if we hurry.” Heavy footsteps were approaching quickly. “Paige? Sweetheart, where are you?”
