“Sorry for all the commotion. It's kind of hard to go anywhere these days without causing a bit of an uproar.” She grinned proudly down at her babies. “They are all asleep right now, so I'm going to just sit down and relax for a bit if that's okay with you guys.”
Angel tugged me down onto the couch with her as the others sat around us. For a moment, it was quiet as they all looked at me.
“What?” I finally blurted out.
Lily laughed. “Sorry. We're all just really curious about the woman who bested Emmett.”
“He rarely even dates anymore and when he does, it's usually humans. Less chance of attachments, though not entirely impossible. I mean, I'm proof of that.”
“You're really human and mated to a wolf?” I asked, equally curious and cautious of the human woman.
“I am. Bonded to him as well. Yes, that's possible,” she explained while rolling her eyes.
I suspected she got a lot of inquiries about that. Clearly, they'd been together for a while. The toddler on her lap was a testament to that.
The front door burst open as Cammie and Audrey returned. They gushed over the babies even while Kate reminded them to be quiet. They checked on the other baby in Winnie's arms and cooed happily.
“Sean's getting so big, Aunt Winnie,” Audrey said.
“Aunt Katherine, since the babies are sleeping, do you want Audrey and I to take Carter outside to play?” Cammie asked.
“That would be great. Thanks girls.”
She passed the toddler off and they left as quickly as they came.
“It takes a village,” Lily said. The others nodded their agreement.
“So did I miss the story?” Kate asked.
“What story?” I wondered aloud.
“The story of how you and Emmett met and what exactly happened? I've heard all sorts of crazy rumors at the diner.”
“Kate's Diner, it's the best place to eat in town,” Angel explained.
“They met out on the range,” Katherine confirmed.
Angel sighed. “It's not like she's the first to meet her mate out on that range. Austin and I met out there too, remember?”
Despite my initial impression, I really liked Angel.
“But you were invited to be there,” Katherine argued. “She was trespassing and attacked some of the cowboys.”
“She didn't attack them. It was self-defense,” Lily told them, and something about her tone told me that was the final word.
“I didn't mean to trespass. I didn’t even realize there was a Pack nearby.”
Lily held up her hand. “Already said I'll discuss that with him.”
“I don’t expect any of you to understand or even believe me, but it's not something I can help. I'm only in my skin right now because of the Alpha order Thomas issued. I still can't believe that worked.”
“Wyatt told me it was bad, but I couldn't believe how much damage this place took. It's crazy. Sounded like a farfetched zombie movie when he tried to explain it to me.”
“That's what I thought too,” Angel said. “Austin told me that nearly every unmated male in the Pack showed up trying to fight their way in here and when Thomas issued the order they all seemed a bit confused like they were waking up from a nightmare or something.”
“Horror movie for sure,” Katherine agreed.
“It was pretty terrifying,” Lily admitted.
